Search ResultsI had an enjoyable bike ride of exploration around the nooks and crannies of Ohara the other day, so I thought I'd share some photos. Here's the ride at Strava: The impetus for this ride was to check out some of the minor roads I'd seen on 路面と勾 配 (literally "road surface and slope"), a blog full of reports on exceedingly-minor mountain roads, each replete with detailed photos and commentary. He's got well over 1,000 such reports so far. I spend a fair amount of my time updating OpenStreetMaps based on his articles. These are the maps used by Strava, [...] View full post » It took a casual spin around Kyoto last weekend, as the cherry blossoms were starting to come in. Looking down the street from next to the construction, toward the right, it was a mad house: So, instead I went up the steep road that goes under the shrine arch seen two photos above. Not long past the shrine gate, I noticed a huge statue off to the side, and wondered how long it had been there and how I had never noticed it before: It turns out that it's been there since 1955, and is 24m (80') tall. First there was "Kyoto’s Biggest Snow in 58 Years" and its followup, about the big snow that started on New Year's day (2015). Then, two days later, there was an even bigger snow that garnered "Kyoto At Night During a Heavy Snow" posted in three parts (parts one, two, and three). View full post » This picture is from the same snowy outing almost two years ago that produced the three-part "Kyoto At Night During a Heavy Snow" posts (part 1 - part 2 - part 3). This shot mimics the one that leads Part 2, but this one was taken five hours later (at 4:42am) after the snow had long stopped falling. Anyway, it's just a random photo to accompany a recommendation for users of Adobe Lightroom to read Victoria Bampton's "Lightroom Catalogs – Top 10 Misunderstandings" article. New users may find some misconceptions cleared up, while veterans will find a good resource to [...] View full post » The old Kyoto Theater Hall near my house reopened today after some years of renovation, emerging as "ROHM Theater Kyoto" (ロームシアター京都). ROHM is a semiconductor company based here in Kyoto, last mentioned on my blog more than 10 years ago, before I got into photography or even blogging that much, on this post about their annual Christmas lights at their company headquarters. They must have paid a boatload of money to someone to get branding rights for this renovated concert/theater complex. I have a vague recollection of seeing some kind of performance at the original theater 25 years ago, when [...] View full post » |
