Online Exif (Image Data) Viewer

Since I'm getting more interested in photography and understanding cameras and techniques, I find myself wanting to know the details under which a photo was taken. Modern digital cameras encode a lot of such data -- shutter speed, lens focal length, etc. -- into the image file, generally called "Exif Data" ("Exif" stands for "Exchangeable Image File Format" and as an acronym would normally be written as "EXIF", but the standard creators explicitly say that it should be written "Exif", which is nice.).

So, I wrote a little online Exif viewer to view whatever data might be [...]

More hardware problems; Shame on Dell

My horribly flaky hardware had a resurgence of horribleness yesterday with my ill-conceived idea to windowsupdate the thing. After installing 52 security updates, rebooting, installing Service Pack 2, rebooting, then installing the cumulative SP2 security updates (Lord knows how many in there), and rebooting again, my machine is now just as flaky as it was last September. Sigh.

"WindowsUpdate™ -- keep up to date on all the latest bugs and inconveniences."

Despite the clear connection between WindowsUpdate and the problems, I believe it's somehow also related to my hardware, and that if I replace it I might [...]

Update on Transcend 4GB 120x compact-flash card

This is a followup to my previous post on testing a Transcend 4GB 120x Compact Flash card. In that post, I found that its write speed was actually slower than the 80x version of the same card (tested in a separate post).

I contacted Transcend Japan about the slow card, and to their credit they replied very quickly at each step along the way. However, their initial reply was full of wishy-washy ways to avoid the issue, saying that there could indeed be situations where tests shows the 80x is faster than the 120x and that the speed [...]

Timing another Transcend card, a 120x card this time

This is a followup to a previous post in which I did writing-speed tests of a Transcend 80x 4GB Compact Flash card, with a Nikon D200. This time, I'm testing the 120x version, which I just received today after I purchasing it for 29,000 yen (about US $250) from an online shop.

The tested card's model number is TS4GCF120 and its serial number is 129542-0419.

As before, the test was done with a newly-formatted card with the D200 in manual-focus, manual-exposure (1/200, wide-open aperture) mode at ISO 1600. Measurements were taken from audio-recordings using Adobe Audition. The [...]

Timing a Transcend 80x 4GB Compact Flash card with a Nikon D200

This post details some speed tests I did with my Nikon D200 and a Transcend brand 80x 4 GB compact flash card. It's mostly a writeup for Digital Photography Review, and likely of little interest to the regular reader (is there more than one?) of my blog.

I'm sure that Digital Photography Review will do many timing tests when the D200 is reviewed, but I suspect that a Transcend memory card will not be tested. Since Transcend cards are significantly cheaper than San Disk and Lexar (at least here in Japan, where a 4 gig San Disk Extreme [...]
