Archive for the 'Tech' CategoryPosts relating to techie things So, I got email from my sister letting me know that my blog's comment-submit process was broken. This must be what my mystery fan referred to in his kind message to me this morning. It turns out that I'd introduced a bug into my comment-processing mechanism the other day. It's fixed now, but I really can't apologize enough. The poor guy tried to submit his "you're a jackass" comment 11 times, and after it failing through no fault of his own, you certainly can't begrudge him the subsequent "you suck" he tacked on. My sister tried [...]
So after losing my old 60-gig 4th-generation iPod at a hotel in Malaysia )-: I got home and ordered a new one, a 60-gig 5th-generation iPod. The new one is thinner than the old one, can play videos, and is black. I use it mostly at the gym, but also in the car and sometimes out and about or at home. I like it a lot. I'm not one of those rabid Apple fans, or, perhaps, even an Apple fan at all, but I must admit that Apple does a very good job of keeping things simple and [...] View full post » As I commented a few weeks ago, I worried that the barometric altimeter on my GPS unit (a Garmin GPSmap 60CS) was worthless because there are many factors that change air pressure besides a change in altitude (such as holding the unit in a breeze, moving with the unit, changing weather, etc.) So, I sent a note off to Garmin asking about it, hoping that I was just missing something. Really, why would they include such a feature if it was worthless, much less tout it as they do? Here's what I sent: Is there a [...]
Every so often I look at my webserver logs to see by what means people happen to find pages on my web server. It's particularly interesting to look at the web searches that bring people to random blog pages and the like, and it can sometimes be quite amusing just to see the variety. As one might expect, many of the searches that bring people here are related to my book (since the book's web site is also on this server). There are also a fair number of searches on my name, which are probably book-related as [...]
Last month I bought a GPS unit (a Garmin GPSmap 60CS) so that I can geoencode photos. For example, clicking on the photo in this post brings up a page with data about the image, including a satellite map with the location marked. And the photo in this other recent post has the speed and bearing shown as well. The GPSmap 60CS is a nice unit. It has a lot of functions (including a magnetic compass and a barometric altimeter), but after using it for a while I do have some gripes that I'd like to mention, in [...] View full post » |
