Jeffrey's Lightroom Plugins are developed and released by me, Jeffrey Friedl, an American living in Kyoto, Japan. That's me at right, in the yellow shirt holding the dish of bubble stuff.
My plugins, for Adobe Lightroom Classic (plugins are not supported by Lightroom CC), are “donationware”. I develop, release, and maintain them for free, and you can use them for free forever, but I hope you find them worthy of a gift of thanks or encouragement. They are fully functional for a long initial trial period, after which functionality is reduced until they are registered. You don't need to register, but if you want to, it generally costs one cent (a PayPal fee).

After the initial trial period ends, I don't want to shut them down completely and leave someone in the lurch, but I do want to encourage registration (and potential gifts), so they become somewhat restricted until registered, usually to processing no more than 10 images at a time.
If you don't mind the restriction, there's no need to register.
How it Works
In short: make a payment of any amount to me via PayPal, and the resulting PayPal transaction ID is your plugin registration code, good until your Lightroom serial number changes.
If you choose to make a payment of $0.01 (or whatever minimum PayPal allows for your currency), PayPal takes that as a fee and I receive nothing, and that's perfectly fine. If you choose to make a larger payment, anything left after PayPal takes its fees remains as a gift to me for which I (and more importantly, my wife) am most appreciative.
You do not need a PayPal account: if you don't have one, you can pay through PayPal using a credit card.
To generate a registration code, uwe one of the buttons below to make a payment through PayPal.
Note — I've gotten scattered reports that PayPal inexplicably forces a minimum of $1.00 for some folks, when starting a transaction with the button below. If you're caught up in this, you can get around that forced minimum by going to paypal.com directly, click on “send”, and setting the recipient to “jfriedl@yahoo.com” manually. Sorry for the hassles.

The only requirement to register is the minimum PayPal fee, which I do not receive. Whether to include any gift for me is completely optional and up to you. You can use one of the buttons to the left, or manually generate a transaction with the recipient set to “jfriedl@yahoo.com”. (This manual method must be used if PayPal in your country does not allow the sending of gifts.) |
How To Use Your Registration Code
After you generate a transaction at PayPal, you can find the “Unique Transaction ID” (or, for some users, the “Receipt Number”) immediately on the confirmation page, the confirmation email, or your PayPal history screen...
Warning: PayPal sometimes shows on the confirmation web page a 17-digit number instead of a proper Transaction ID (a 17-character code with a mix of numbers and letters) or a Receipt Number (16 digits in a “####-####-####-####” pattern). If you get that, see the confirmation email from PayPal for the proper code.
Visit the plugin in Lightroom's Plugin Manager, and in the upper-right section you should find a “Register Here” button, as illustrated here:

That'll bring up a dialog in which you can paste your registration code. (It is case sensitive, so it's best to copy-and-paste so that there are no typos.)
The Fine Print
I'm trying to be really laid back and reasonable... no one wants to give a gift to a jerk... but I've got to set some limits, so here they are...
I've developed plugins for years (here's why), pushing out thousands of updates, and it is my intention to continue to push out new features and bug fixes from time to time. But I must be clear that while it's my intention, it is not a guarantee. I am not a business and I don't want to be a business — this is just a hobby, after all — and you are not purchasing anything when you register the plugin. Officially, there are no guarantees other than the registration code will work to remove the trial-period-ended limitation of the copy of the plugin you have, for the version of Lightroom you have.
Your registration ties one plugin to one Lightroom serial number, and you can use the same registration code (PayPal transaction ID) to register that plugin with that same Lightroom serial number on multiple machines, such as if you use Lightroom on the two machines Adobe's license allows, or you later have to do a full system reinstall.
If you don't have a PayPal account and don't have a credit card, you won't be able to register plugins in the normal way. Send me a note and I'll take care of you. I will request (but not require) that you send me some good karma by doing something nice for someone locally.
Similarly, if you administer Lightroom on a bunch of computers (e.g. at a school or large business) and you don't have a single bulk-install serial number from Adobe, send me a note and I'll get you a less restricted registration code so that you don't have to hassle with PayPal a zillion times.
Due to the nature of the system I've built, you cannot register a plugin during Lightroom's “free trial” phase, because it doesn't yet have a serial number. Also, I do not permit the use of my plugins on pirated copies of Lightroom.
Major Lightroom Upgrades, or Moving to the Creative Cloud
Registrations are tied to the Lightroom serial number. Because the Lightroom serial number changes at a major upgrade (e.g. Lr7.x to Lr8.x), or if you move from standalone Lightroom to the Creative-Cloud Lightroom or back, plugins become deregistered.
As always, you can generate a new registration code (for one cent — 1/100th of a dollar — if you wish). Sorry for the hassles.
Dot releases (e.g. Lr6.0 → Lr6.1) do not affect registrations.
Problems?
If You Need to Re-Register but Have Forgotten Your Registration Code, or It Doesn't Seem To Work...
If you need to reregister and have forgotten your code, it might be easiest/fastest just to create a new code with a 1-cent transaction.
On non-CC versions of Lightroom, the plugin includes a “Forgot Your Code?” button on the plugin-registration dialog, which can retrieve the your code if you had previously entered it for that plugin on that install of Lightroom.
You can also always check your PayPal history screen.
If a registration code is rejected as “used on another install”, it's because your Lightroom serial number has changed (because, for example, you performed a major upgrade, such as from Lr5 to Lr6, or you switch to or from the Creative Cloud). Sorry for the hassles, but please just generate a new code (with a $0.01 amount if you like).

Very good question. I use a lot of open source software daily, both while working on the plugins and not. I have a 20+ year history of donating my time and skill to open source projects (my first was in ’87 with flex, and I’ve helped on many since, some extensively (such as Perl). I feel I’ve given a lot. That being said, my Metadata Wrangler plugin would not be possible without Phil Harvey’s Image::ExifTool library, so I intend to pass along half of what is donated to me for that plugin to him. The GPS plugin is less dependent, so I was thinking a smaller percentage. I’ll mention this here to answer your question, but I am still debating whether to include a mention on the relevant plugin pages and registration pages. Part of me feels that it’s more noble to just quietly pass it along, but part of me feels that I should “share the glory” as well as the cash. I’m still trying to decide what to do on that front. —Jeffrey
I love the Flickr plugin and use it a lot. How will this be handled with reinstallation. I do a lot of reinstallation over and over again since I test a lot of software and hardware setups. Will the reg code work every time or will it be seen as a “new” pc as some programs that require activation like Nero and Roboform?
By default, each code works for two installs, so if you’re going to be doing a lot of futzing around, send me an email after you perform at least one registration (and include your registration code) and I’ll make it so it won’t cause you hassles. —Jeffrey
Excellent choice – I’m all for it and will pay/donate tonight for Zenfolio plugin gladly (and Metadata wrangler when it will be registration later on). But I am on the same boat as Kevin above – I do tend to upgrade hardware and re-install my OS from time to time (well not very frequently but definitely once a year) and would like to know if there is a way to preserve the registration across those upgrades. I currently back up all the LR catalogue and the application settings directory (together with installed plugins) but I am not sure if this will be enough when I restore it on the new/reinstalled Windows?
I’m curious as to whether your installation count takes care of the re-installation of LR. Will installing the plugin into a new instance of LR on the same computer increment the installation count?
Generally speaking, a registration should carry across Lightroom reinstalls. If you accidentally drop your computer in a vat of acid or something, and need to reinstall everything from scratch and find that the registration has not carried over, just send me a note and I’ll take care of it. —Jeffrey
Thanks for all the work! I use the plugins for Flickr, Facebook and GPS Support (when I find my GPS again..). The export plugins saves me a lot of time, and being able to geotag without using GPS Photo Linker (I’m on a Mac) is great!
I am one of those people without PayPal access (though I do have a credit card, and a checkbook). I use your plug-ins for Smugmug and Facebook, so I’d be registering two plug-ins. Can you please let me know how to submit my donation?
I don’t know of any other way. PayPal allows you to do a credit card even without a PayPal account. I looked into the comparable service at Google, but it’s not available to me in Japan. —Jeffrey

Jeffrey, I really like the way you went about this. I normally don’t donate for donationware (I’m not gonna lie), but your plugins are exceptional, and are an extremely valuable asset to lightroom. I wouldnt use lightroom, if these didnt exist. My only thought is to make it so that instead of being able to use the reg code on more than one lightroom install, make us able to use it on more than one plugin. For example, I only have 1 lightroom, and probably wont have any more (unless i get a new unibody mac….) but i use both facebook and flickr plugin. I dont mind donating a second time (of lesser amount), but as a matter of convenience in the future.

I have your smugmug, flickr, and facebook plugin but the plugin only validated smugmug, most important, and facebook, less important. I needed to update the flickr plugin but now I can’t validate it.
Lastly, because it validated two plugins on my main system does that now mean I lose the ability to validate on my laptop?

I would be happy to pay for this if it weren’t so sloppily done and intrusive. Every time I use it is either broken or I am forced to upgrade to another version which provides no benefit. In the latest debacle there are typos in the export dialog, the register link does not point to the registration page and paypal page is not working. It is now broken again. I realise that this is a lot of work, but a lot of it could be avoided by working on your quality control and giving up these pointless micro updates.
I’m not aware of any broken links, typos, or PayPal issues, although typos wouldn’t surprise me. I’m all ears if you have constructive comments (what is do you find to be sloppy? what do you think is intrusive?). Of course, fixing any issues you report would involve yet another upgrade, so perhaps you should just pass on using my plugins… —Jeffrey
I submitted a payment, and the plug-in manager (for the export to smugmug plugin) says “plugin is unrestricted…” I reloaded the plugin and restarted Lightroom as suggested, but I still can’t export more than 10 at a time. Did I do something wrong?

I love your plugins! I have the geoencode and the flickr plugins; my question is, I am going to be trying the new windows 7 RC and I want to install and use the plugins on the same computer. How do I de-register the plugins and then re-register them? I also like to rebuild my computer frequently (I like to try out lots of software) to start fresh, but it is always the same computer (unless I do a hardware upgrade, which may also be soon). I have this problem with other software that I have purchased and it makes me feel like a criminal trying to explain that it’s the same computer.

If you are exporting a New Set of photos, it would be nice to check a box that says “Add to a Collection”? That was you can tell the Set to get filed into one (or more?) of your Collections. Otherwise I have to do that manually through the Flickr web interface which is just a mildly annoying extra time step.

I wish it were possible, but Lightroom’s plugin infrastructure doesn’t allow a plugin any access to collections. The best I can suggest is to make use of the ‘Uploaded to Flickr” custom metadata, perhaps as part of a Smart Collection. —Jeffrey
I occasionally use your plugins (flickr export, metadata wrangler, and experimented with morgrify). I really don’t mind supporting you in this venture, but the registration code business worrys me. Firstly, I would love to see some kind of system to be able to use one code for multiple / all plugins. Secondly, the activation requirement is a looming hassle since I tend to reinstall operating systems every now and then, so something that didn’t have an activation limit would be nice (or a way to de-authorize systems like itunes). I already ran into the windows XP activation limit years ago and have to call microsoft every time, which is a major hassle. I don’t mean to accuse you of having an onerous system, but I have learned to be wary of these kind of restrictions and the threat of impending disaster that they represent.
Also, if I do end up making multiple donations for different plugins, should I make one larger one and the others at 1 cent? That way paypal doesn’t skim as much off each transaction.
Whether it’s onerous or not is for each to decide for themselves, just the same as whether its convenient or inconvenient, a looming hassle, or a “threat”. To each their own. I’ve made it clear that those with special needs (or special desires) can contact me, although I suppose that in itself could be considered “onerous”. Those inclined to send a gift, but for multiple plugins, can do one of three ways: 1) one regular donation, followed by multiple 1-cent registrations. 2) Separate donations for each, or 3) one regular donation, followed by an email with the registration code (after it’s been used for one registration) and details of one’s needs. There are pluses and minuses associated with each (PayPal skims more from method #2, but method #1 doesn’t let you “vote” with your action. Method #3 is best in those respects, but requires more effort on your part.) In any case, I’m appreciative of the gifts and of those who send them. —Jeffrey

Fantastic work on these plugins; the ones I use the most are:
Geo, Flickr, and Picasaweb, in that order.
For those reinstalling every so often why not just back-up your ‘Friedl Files’/plugin directory and copy them back afterwards- I’d assume you do this for other software – if not you’re wasting a lot of time reinstalling everything frequently.
Additionally — and I assume this can’t be done because of LR’s plugin restrictions — it would be great if the plugin list on the left of ‘manage plugins’ would show which plugins had a new version available, and maybe a one-click ‘download + update’ button. I assume this can’t be done though as I think it would have been implemented before.
You’re correct, it’s not possible. The whole concept of versions and upgrades are not part of the LR plugin infrastructure… I built it all myself. —Jeffrey
Thank you very much for the great plugins! I mostly use the export to Smugmug and Flickr ones, but I use a few of the others occasionally as well (Run any command and geotagging). They’ve saved me a ton of time, since I’m a bit obsessive about the metadata for my photos and I usually upload to multiple photo sites. If I wanted to change a tag or caption before, I had to manually change it in a bunch of places, now I can just make the change in Lightroom and sync them to the photo sites without having to re-upload or make manual entries. Being able to convert RAW to JPEG for upload without having to copy around a bunch of files is a big timesaver, too.
I’m still using Geosetter most of the time for geotagging (already used to that workflow from before I started using Lightroom and I like how Geosetter adds the city/state/neighboorhood/country as tags automatically from the Geonames database – the reverse-geocoding in your plugin didn’t seem to get as much data when I tried it), but your geotag plugin is good for when I have to manually tag images (when I don’t have a GPX file from my datalogger) since I can easily grab coordinates from Google Earth with it.

About 1 yr year ago (7.23.08) I downloaded Version 1.3.1.48; I can’t remember if I gave money for it or not. The program has been excellent for me to use. I recently (sometime in 2009) upgraded to LR 2 and, mostly by happenstance, came across your upgrade for Smugmug. I think the development of these, or any, such programs is completely magical (i certainly haven’t a clue how it is done) and I am glad you are doing the development. I am also completely satisfied with your payment approach for the program, incredibly fair and actually considerate. You will need a larger size Stetson with all of the accolades!

This comment concerns LR export performance on a multi-core workstation- I use a Mac Pro quad. I have recently read and confirmed that breaking a job into smaller subsets and setting up multiple exports completes quicker (about 30% faster in my tests) than one larger export job. Is there any way you may be able to code the plugin to spawn multiple exports to take advantage of this?
For example, if I have a 300 image job ready to upload to SM, 3 jobs of 100 images each is much faster. The tests show that anything more than 3 starts to reduce performance due to overhead.
Yeah, Snow Leopard will have Grand Central and may equalize this, but then again, I doubt that Adobe will recode LR to run only on Snow Leopard.

If Lightroom suddenly lost its ability to do networking, you probably have some kind of firewall/”zone defense”/etc security system that needs an exception added for LR. —Jeffrey
hey Jeffrey.. using your lightroom-export to facebook for about 2-3 months now and just yesterday I donated. I just wanted to share one small detail that has fallen in my attention and somebody might have mentioned before.
When using the script.. I set the img quality to 100 and the ppi to 300.. After when I change the export method in Lightroom, to hard disc… okey. the setting is 100% and everything fine. When I want to export to facebook again.. the image quality is back to 75 and the ppi is set to 72.. is there any somehow setting to set it costantly the same.. even if I change the method in Lightroom?

For me a 74 year old retiree who has a lot of trouble keeping his PC working that is a big statement.
What is going to happen when Lightroom 3.0 is out in April 2010 – will you have the necessary setup so that the plug-in will work as smmothly, or am I going to have a big problem? I will not use the Beta because I wouldn’t know what to do when one of the many bugs occurr.

Now that we are so close to the LR3 relase why don’t you apply a sort of extension for new donators?
There are two answers to that question: the technological answer is that the registration system will change completely with LR3 (it’ll be much better, tied to the LR serial number, meaning less hassle for those who reinstall after an OS upgrade or the like). But the real answer is that it costs just 1 cent to register, and if LR3 comes out tomorrow and you want to reregister, it’ll cost just an extra cent. I don’t feel that’s a huge burden. You can always send me a gift :-), but it’s not required, either now or when LR3 comes out. —Jeffrey

If Lightroom can’t reach my server, it’s likely because either your system clock is not set properly, or there’s some kind of security app (Little Snitch? Zone Defense?) that’s stopping Lightroom from doing SSL to regex.info. Dig around along those lines… —Jeffrey

I just registered the Facebook exporter plugin and am unable to authenticate. I click “authenticate on Facebook” go to Facebook, authenticate, click the “I am authenticated” button that pops up, and the plugin page reloads and says I’m still not logged in. I’ve tried restarting the app, as well as logging out of Facebook and trying again a dozen times. Has the API changed again somehow in a way that broke the plugin?

This is the first I’ve heard of this, and it’s difficult to imagine a scenario where this might happen that doesn’t involve a bug at Facebook. Maybe try again later and it’ll work? Also, perhaps try setting a different browser as your default and give it a try…. —Jeffrey

No, no donation is required, ever. You can generate a new code in the same way as an old one, with a one-cent transaction at PayPal (which PayPal takes as a fee; no donation to me or anyone else). Hi Jeffrey, I’m having a small problem with the Folder Watch plugin and I thought I would check with you. Basically, I got it to install just fine and even scan a folder without a problem but it seems that when I close out of Lightroom and re-open it, the “Watch” function is then un-checked and I have to go in to the plugin manager and re-check it before it will scan new photos that have been added to that particular folder. Hopefully I’m just missing something stupid and you can point me in the right direction. Thanks for your help and thanks for developing this great plugin!

By “GA” do you mean GM? The non-Publish stuff should work just fine in pre-Lr3b1 versions of the plugin, but post-Lr3b1 versions don’t work in Lr3…. am working day and night on getting an Lr3 version out. —Jeffrey

A1: only if you want it registered :-). A2: Pre Lr3b versions of the FB plugin should work fine in Lr3 (but their registrations in Lr2 or Lr3 won’t carry forward to the Lr3 version when it’s released… see the registration page for details. Versions that came out after Lr3b with some basic publish support won’t work in Lr3. I’m working day and night trying to get the Lr3 version out. I hope next week. —Jeffrey

Yes, registering an Lr3 version of the plugin (even if the Lr3 version of the plugin is labeled “beta”) in the real Lr3 (not either of the Lr3 betas) registers it. hello, i would like to make a donation because your plugins are awesome. but i’m worried about how the plugin registration is tied to the LR serial number. doesn’t this allow you to collect a list of LR serial numbers?
Plugins have access to a cryptographic hash derived from the serial number, not the serial number itself. It’s like a fingerprint… having a fingerprint doesn’t tell you what human you’re dealing with, but it’s very easy to check whether a specific human can generate this exact fingerprint. It’s a one-way translation.
But perhaps the more appropriate answer is that there’s a level of trust involved in installing any plugin for Lightroom: the mere act of installing it (not even using it) gives the plugin unbridled access to the computer. Use the same level of caution you’d use when downloading any kind of program, and stick to sources you can trust. —Jeffrey

I ran into an issue with the .190 version of the Flickr plugin, using an Publishing collection I created in a previous version of the plugin.
Just as a test, I created a new service with the current version and the now all works fine.
@Jeffrey: you can ignore the log I send you. My problem was fixed by recreating the publish service.

No one ever has to “pay” for my plugins, because I give them away for free, but if you want to register, you do need to pay PayPal for a registration code, and new codes are required for Lr3 versions, as described on this page and in the FAQ. Sorry for the hassles. With the Lr3 versions, the code is tied to your Lr serial number, so it’ll work wherever you have the same Lr installed. —Jeffrey

My plugins all work for six weeks without restriction, then continue to work even then, though with some restrictions unless you decide to register them. You can’t buy my plugins; they are free. —Jeffrey
I was about to get very frustrated when I found out I was going to have to register, but man, was I wrong! Somehow Jeffrey has worked magic with PayPal so the entire process took less than 30 seconds. Seriously. The plugin even saved my export information so I didn’t have to re-enter all of my settings! Modern versions of the plugin now warn you that the trial period has expired but that you can still use it one last session without having to register, so I hoped to avoid throwing a sudden wrench in people’s workflow. An trial of some Adobe software or other once did this for me, and I thought it was really classy to let me have one extra day so I wouldn’t be totally dorked right when I was planning on using the thing, so I implemented it in my plugins. If you didn’t get that but have a recent version of the plugin, I’d like to hear about it…. —Jeffrey

You can try my plugin freely (and use it forever freely), so it doesn’t hurt to try. The built-in plugin is much simpler; mine is more complex, but has many more features. If the built-in plugin does everything you want, there’s no advantage to using mine. —Jeffrey

Hate to bother you but…I have no problem getting connected to smugmug (from your plugin) but I get a msg at the bottom of the export (LR3) window saying “unable to export -quality seems a tad high…” I was just doing a test of the plugin, using two jpgs that are already on my smug site. I just registered my lightroom 3 to smugmug preset but I am getting a “resolution is a tad high” error. Goes away when I move the quality slider from 100 to 92. Is this supposed to happen? Up until today I could export at original size, 300 dpi and 100% quality. Did something change?

It would however be nice to be able to spend a set amount and get the software without having to register it on every machine I use. It’s an annoyance having to play ‘Guess the code’ with each plugin and enter every Paypal transaction id, hoping I’ll get the right one eventually.
Another issue is that after spending $30 on these plugins in April 2010 my transaction codes no longer work (just five months later…). Come on…

Jeffrey, Your plugins are great and I find myself using them almost daily. However I got confused about the latest Picasaweb plugin version and the “renaming” instructions. Now I have managed to destroy the functionality and don’t know how to recover it!

I’m not sure I understand what problem you’re reporting, but it’s safe to delete all “picasaweb-jfriedl.lrplugin” folders, and download a fresh one any time, and just point the Plugin Manager at it. Yes, Google does photos much (much MUCH!) better than Facebook. —Jeffrey

The export to SmugMug plugin really is a life saver, I had been trying to achieve the “one-click-magic” for a while, where Lightroom could take a RAW picture and do everything at once: convert, resize, export and categorize in SmugMug. Hey presto, your plugin makes it all possible.

I just tried to upgrade this plugin on windows 7 by pressing the Upgrade button on the plug-in manager page and I got the following error:
Error unzipping download to a temporary folder
c:\Users\Michael\AppData\Local\Temp\picasaweb.zip
I did, however, manage to install it manually in C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Modules
on windows 7.

The automatic upgrade stuff was all built by me as part of the plugin… Adobe offers no support for it. So I’ve got to do the best I can, but many things can conspire against it working, with access permissions being the biggest problem. It often works, but if it doesn’t, the manual install is the way to go. —Jeffrey

Just tried to re-register for LR4, and crashed LR. When I tried to Alt-Tab to my web browser from the registration dialogue, the dialogue popped up an “invalid code” box, I switched windows with the mouse to get the code, entered it, and then LR crashed. When I tried again (without alt-tabbing) I got registration to work.

There’s no “purchase” or “license” involved with the plugin, only “purchase” with respect to the fee you pay PayPal if/when you create a registration code. Registration codes tie a plugin to a specific Lightroom serial number, and since an upgrade from Lr3 to Lr4 causes your serial number to change, you need to generate a new code if you want the registration to remain. This will cost at least one cent at PayPal. More than the cost, there’s the pain of the hassle factor, sorry. You’ll run into the same thing in a couple of years when Lr5 is released. Sorry. —Jeffrey

It says that it is in a location where lightroom cant find it and if I can’t give it permissions then I’ll have to do a manual upgrade. If you can’t remove it from the plugin manager, it must be in Lightroom’s system area, so the only way to remove it is to delete it from disk. However now I have taken a course on using Lightroom 4 where your plug in was mentioned and I remembered that I had installed it, but not really used it. It’s been awhile but here I am again. I upgraded LR to 4.1 RC2 and the trials have all expired, I just finished the donating process on the first plugin, it worked on my mac laptop but on my windows desktop, there’s no button to click to enter the registration code. After looking at the other plugins, one shows a “registration needed type message” where the button is supposed to be. I checked in LR and the “lightroom registration” is now greyed out and it doesn’t show my serial number like how it shows on my mac, have no clue how that happened. Any ideas? You’re seeing an odd and inconvenient effect of the RC builds. They don’t allow you to enter a serial, so if you had not entered your Lr4 serial with Lr4.0, you’re blocked out from doing so until you upgrade (or downgrade) to a version that lets you. One idea is to install the 4.0 build from the main Lightroom site, enter your serial number and register the plugins, then re-install the 4.1RC. —Jeffrey

I am running an 2012 iMac with Adobe Lightroom 4.1. I have been trying to register your Zenfolio LR export plugin but he register button greyed out. I have read your blog (about beta upgrades) and have reinstalled lightroom 4.0 from the original disk. Unfortunatley the registration button is still greyed out. Can you help me with this.

I have downloaded the plug in, made my donation and cannot “visit my plug-in in llightroom plug-in manager”. It (jf Zenfolio “installed may not work”) shows in the plug-in box, but as disabled – when i click “enable” on right, i get the following message:

I love your plugins and thankful for all you do for the Lightroom community. If I’m using Adobe’s Creative Cloud is there any way to register your plug-ins? I saw your note about Creative Cloud, but I don’t understand the implications. Can I get them to work in this environment?
The plugins work fine… the only issue is with registration… you currently can’t recover a lost registration on a CC install, and once I am able to figure out a solution to the internal registration issues, your current registrations will likely disappear when you upgrade. At worst this means generating a new (1-cent if you like) registration code, but no one likes to be surprised, so I make it clear that it’s still up in the air. No ETA on a solution, other than “unlikely soon”. )-: —Jeffrey
I got the export to flickr plugin a week or two ago. I had been having problems with the Adobe provided flickr plugin for awhile. I saw some comments that pointed out that your plugin worked well. It has worked great and I just registered it. Thanks for providing this.

Hi Jeffrey, I have a newly registered copy of the Picasa plugin for LR4 and have a couple questions:
1) How do I replace a photo with a photo of a particular filename with a photo with a different filename. Its the same photo, but an improved edit.
2) In back-syncing my current Picasa albums, I noticed I had to perform a re-population of the albums in the settings dialog. However, not all the files re-populated. Do I have to perform a manual association to the photo URL for the photos that don’t sync?
I’m still futzing with it, but so far so good.

The only way to replace one Lightroom photo item with another at the same location is to manually associate the new one with the old URL, after having manually cleared the association from the old one. And yes, if the automatic association stuff doesn’t work, and you really want prior images associated, you have to do it manually. Unfun. )-: —Jeffrey

Your Lightroom (version 1.4) plugin has worked flawlessly for quite some time. A few days ago it ceased it’s ability to login to my zenfolio account. Wondering if there is anything I can do. I tried resetting my password a number of times, but it won’t login to my account. The account is fine. I’ll be updating my computer in a few months and updating my version of Lightroom. The plugins work fine on a Creative Cloud install… it’s just they can’t recall your registration code should you need it (say, after a system reinstall), so you have to refer to your PayPal history (or drop a cent on a new code, if that’s faster). About how I provide plugins, it’s not self-effacing, it’s a specific strategy to keep things easier on myself… if it’s a business, I have to provide support, but I don’t have the capacity to even read all the email I get, so keeping it a hobby allows me to feel (somewhat) less stressed about not addressing everything. And if it were a product I’m selling, I don’t think I’d get an invite for dinner. 🙂 —Jeffrey
after upgrading to LR5, i sent you another paypal gift for the zenfolio plugin. it registered fine on my desktop but on my notebook, with the same LR5 license as the desktop, fails the registration process as having already been used with a different license number. Is this known bug?

To do multiple plugins with one registration, create a code with a transaction (of any size) and actually use it to register one plugin, then drop me a note with the code and your needs, and I’ll take care of it. —Jeffrey

Mike, I think you misunderstood me. I’m not complaining about the pricing structure, only about the payment model; paying $5 per plugin (or whatever price) wouldn’t solve my issue. And rest assured, I wasn’t planning on paying actually 5$, but I was giving an example.

As described above, plugins become unregistered if you change your Lr serial, and in this case you need a new code to reregister. You can generate a new code with a $.01 transaction (which I don’t get) if you like. —Jeffrey

Made Paypal contribution with the intention of covering contributions to both your ‘Export To Zenfolio’ and ‘MetaDataWrangler’ plug-ins that are now installed. I downloaded and contributed to both of these back in 2010 and am really impressed with your product results — as are hundreds (maybe thousands) of us.
Do I need to make a separate Paypal contribution for Wrangler, or can you combine these registrations from one contribution for me so that I can complete my Wrangler registration? Zenfolio registration is completed.

I already registered my plug in for Lightroom to upload the photos directly to my Zenfolio website but the other day I was making room on my computer and somehow deleted the plug in for it that I bought from you. Just download the latest copy of the plugin and install it; the registration should be maintained. If not, visit the registration dialog and try the “forgot your code?” button. If it doesn’t find it, it meas you’ve never registered that plugin, or you’ve changed your Lightroom serial since. In either case, you can quickly create a new registration code with a one-cent transaction at PayPal. (By the way, I grew up 40 miles from you, in Rootstown, near Kent.) —Jeffrey

But on its long list their is no”BC”, and you apparently cannot fill in the box yourself – when you try, up pops the long list that does not include BC. I can see no way around this.

I registered you picasa plug in a few months ago and it worked fine. I recently upgraded lightroom to the subscription model and now the plug in says it’s not registered and that the authorization code is tied to a different serial number of lightroom. Can you help sort this out? Thanks.
Registrations are tied to your Lr serial number, which changed when you moved to the Creative Cloud. It’s a minor hassle, but the fix is to create a new registration code (with a 1-cent transaction if you like). —Jeffrey

My Kaspersky Internet Security firewall settings are set to allow Lightroom access, and I do not get a security-warning error after connecting to your secure server with my browser. Any thoughts?

Hi, I have been using your plugin for years and thanks so much they make my workflow much easier.
I recently go into IR photography, and come across something frequently done but very time consuming. I am not sure if you’re interested in developing it, so I am just making a suggestion.
I found a post showing how to use exiftool and Lightroom to channel swap the DNG:

You might consider applying exiftool to the original file via my Run Any Command plugin, as part of an otherwise-dummy export. You could wrap it all in an export preset. It’d be a bit kludgy because you’re using an export action to modify original files, but it should get the job done. —Jeffrey

My problem is once I use filters to select some photos and I accidentally selected more than I really wanted to, and synchronized the white balance to all of them, without noticing it. After a long time, I couldn’t “Undo”. And the best I can do is to find out those photos in my catalog that, in “History”, the most updated entry is “Synchronize Settings”.
May be you can add something like “Latest History in Development Module”?

I had to fully clean up and reinstall Adobe CC. After reinstalling LR 5.5, I also had to reinstall all plugins (I was able to restore my preferences from a backup, but not the plugins themselves).
Now, I’d like to re-register my plugins, but the usua registration button is replaced with a grey text saying “Plugin registration button appears here after Lightroom is registered with Adobe”.
What should I do? Obviously, I am registered as I am logged in with my Adobe CC credentials.

the latest plug-in for Lightroom CC is not working. It won’t publish, an error box pops up stating “Unexpected HTTP reply from …..”which is the url for the gallery I’m trying to upload. In the plug-in manager in LR, the Zenfolio button is yellow and states…Installed: may not work. Is there a way to reinstall the plug-in or reregister for a new one? I’m using Windows 7 64 bit.

Hello from a longtime user of your Lightroom-to-Smugmug plug-in in Omaha, Nebraska, USA!
I’ve been holding out against switching to the “new Smugmug” because my Smugmug workflow revolves around your plug-in and I’m really happy with it. The last few times I’ve checked, your version history said your plug-in isn’t compatible with the “new Smugmug” (because they never got around to issuing an API, if I remember correctly) and I’m fine with that.
Now, though, I’m getting emails from Smugmug saying “Your version of Smugmug will be retired,” making it sound as if they’re going to force me to switch in the fairly near future. Do you think your plug-in will be able to migrate to the “new Smugmug” at all? If not, should I be barking at Smugmug about this?
I know they’ve got a collection-based approach to publishing from Lightroom, but it’s really lame compared to using your plug-in. Thanks for any info…
Their new API is still in closed beta, so I’ve no plans to move any time soon. I don’t know the relationship (if any) between the old/new API and the old/new user experience, so I’ve sent them a note asking. I do know that many “new SmugMug” users use my plugins, so it’s not wholly incompatible. —Jeffrey
Heard back from SmugMug… the “new SmugMug” mostly works with the old API, but there are some areas not covered. They feel they’re getting closer to releasing the new API from beta, so I’ll probably be updating the plugin for it sometime later this year. —Jeffrey

I used your plugin from several years ago but with the latest version of LR and when I installed the plugin I cannot perform the Authorize process.
When I click on Authorize from Smugmug Account it informs me about the fact that a browser will be launched for authentication but nothing occurs.
Have you an advise to fix it?

I would love to be able to show a track log for a group of pictures (album) on my website. I use Matt’s TTG pluggins for generating the albums and site. I asked him, and he said ask you….
I suppose you could export the track (and photo thumbnails if you like) via the “View selected locations via KML in Google Earth” feature of my Geoencoding Support plugin, then load that KML into your Google Maps, then embed that map on your blog. I’ve never done it, but that’s the avenue I’d try first. —Jeffrey

My plugins are free; no one has “bought” them, and no ones is obliged to pay anything for them. The 1-cent fee to PayPal for registration is optional. I intend to build a plugin for Google Photos if Google comes up with a public API for it. It will be a separate plugin unless the API is just a copy of the PicasaWeb API. Part of me hopes it is, because then I don’t have to do much work, but the PicasaWeb API is atrocious to work with, so for my future sanity I hope they discard it. —Jeffrey

Hey, I just upgraded from LR5.7 to LR6 and am trying to submit a $1 donation to generate a new registration code for my already-registered PicasaWeb plugin. However when I try to make the donation through Paypal it says “Your request failed due to technical difficulties.Please try again after some time.” I’ve tried both Chrome and Safari so I don’t think it’s an issue on my end. Is your Paypal account still active?

I’ve gotten one other report of this, and I, too, have not been able to figure out why. I see plenty of one-cent transactions coming in, and when I test it myself I can do 1 cent, so I’m at a loss as to why a few people would be forced to do a dollar. I’ll continue digging… —Jeffrey
I’m also seeing a requirement to pay a dollar rather than one cent. As I have 10 plugins this means a minimum of $10. I don’t mind the $10 (the plugins are worth it – and I might actually donate more). But if I donate $10 then it appears Paypal takes the lot and Jeffrey gets nothing, which hardly seems fair. Even if I donate $30 paypal still takes at least 1/3 of the donation. Is there any way to make a single donation to cover multiple plugins?

I encountered the problem with Paypal of minimum $1 payment, and while that does not bother me, I cannot enter any amount where it says $0.00. It simply isn’t possible to enter number here! I also tried credit card, and get an error message when I try to pay via that route. I’m stymied now and because I can’t use the plugin will have to upload a large number of files to zenfolio manually. Hope this can be resolved soon.

Regarding the amount apparently fixed at 0.00, it seems that you just need to type numbers, like 1 then 0 then 0 to enter 1.00 usd. At least it worked for me.

A smattering of users are getting this. If you’re among them, and this FAQ doesn’t help, please report the exact version of your OS, your browser, and of Lightroom. I don’t know what the problem is, but I think it’s somehow related to SLL security certificates. —Jeffrey
On updateing to LR 7 all my publishing services plugins are gone. I’ve tried going through my paypal reciepts to check out the registration codes ive found from you and none of them worked. When i click on the Register now button it funnels me to your description of how to register, but does not let me register again. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Thanks!
I’m not sure exactly what you’re reporting, but upgrading Lightroom should not cause any harm to your publish services. Are you sure you had Lightroom upgrade the correct catalog? If so, perhaps try the upgrade again… publish services should not be harmed in any way during an upgrade. As for the unrelated topic of my plugins and registrations, as it’s been for a decade, major upgrades invalidate prior registrations, but new registration codes are essentially free (1 cent). What a great plugin. I used to geotag my photo from a file en Lightroom does it rather properly with however a drawback : City, province, country are discovered but remains in grey in the IPTC field.
Using reversegeo on the photos having already the GPS info works great.
Is is so convenient that I can get the info in my own language !
Do not use google map, the city info for Indonesia is only the kabuten not the actual city.
Openmap gives the proper result.
I have not yet used all the features, with reversegeo only, you already deserve a donation !

Sorry for the hassles, but it’s been this way for a decade, that a major Lr upgrade resets registrations. The plugin is free, so there’s no “buy” involved, unless you consider the minimum 1-cent transaction for the optional registration code to be a “buy”. —Jeffrey
I really don’t like this reset of registration for LR. I had a problem with the configuration file of LR and when I started it again the plugins reported the “already in use for a different Lightroom serial number” for the same version! I don’t have this problem with plugins from other authors.
I’d imagine that you have LrCC, but internally it upgraded from Lr6 to Lr7. Sorry about the hassles… you can make a new code with a 1-cent transaction, if you like. Lightroom doesn’t have any internal support for this kind of stuff, so each plugin author has to figure out their own system, and for better or worse, this is what I came up with a decade ago. —Jeffrey

Recently migrated from LR 6 to LR 7.3 and when attempting to update my copy of the Export To Facebook plugin, I get an error message “The plugin does not seem to be installed in a location where Lightroom can write to it. If you can’t adjust permissions to allow the plugin to update itself, you’ll have to do a manual upgrade.”
Could you send me a link with instructions for doing the manual upgrade?

I just paid Paypal again for the plugin, & got a transaction code (15 digits), but when I enter it in the registration field in Lightroom, it’s not enough numbers, or whatever, because the registration button is still greyed out. I really need this plugin, I use it for work, and I’m on a deadline. Any ideas/suggestions?
PayPal has this infuriating bug whereby they don’t display the leading zeros of a transaction code that has them. Modern versions of my plugin should handle them, but in any case, you can reformat it yourself by adding as many leading zeros are required to make 16 digits, then move the ‘-‘ around so that the digits are in groups of four. —Jeffrey

Would you consider providing the plugins as a subcribtion service or one time fee for all plugins? I’m getting tired of having to register all the plugins every time Adobe makes a major update, I need to reset my computer or install Lr on a different computer. Since Lr now assosiates Lr with an AdobeID, could you also provide a simpler way of permanently registring the plugin?

SFBay Area. I was an early adopter of yesterday’s Adobe updates to LRClassic CC and PSCC. Today the latest version of the Zenfolio updater wouldn’t work in the new version 8 of LRClassic CC. I tried downloading the latest version again, and LR reported that the plugin was “void”. I hope it will be mended to be compatible with LRClassic v. 8 (and that my donation via PayPal today will still be considered to be good).
I’m not sure where you’d see “void”, but many folks using the latest version on the site without problem. Maybe try downloading with a different browser? And be sure to leave the plugin files there after installing (see the next comment here for more). —Jeffrey
Hi. I’m writing from the Olympic Peninsula, located in NW Washington State, USA.
I recently upgraded to the latest OS and Lightroom. Somewhere along the line I got the impression that I needed to upgrade the Zenfolio plug in. I downloaded the latest update from your page. When I click on it it opens Lightroom and tries to upload a bunch of icons. Only the Zenfolio extras shows in the plugins. But, when I use plugin manager it says everything is up and ready to go. Anyway, I registered again, but maybe my computer thinks I didn’t donate enough. I don’t use the plug in often, but I really appreciate it when I do. I’m really confused, and glad we don’t have to go through upgrading very often. Please get back to me. I don’t think I even remember how to upload to Zenfolio without your app.

Your mention of “a bunch of icons” makes me think that you unzipped the download and then went inside the plugin The unzipped “zenfolio-jfriedl.lrplugin” folder is the plugin, so that’s what you select in the Plugin Manager to add. You don’t ever have to donate anything to me (if it’s compulsory, it’s not a donation), so I’m not sure what you mean by that, but in any case, it sounds like you’re not using the latest version. —Jeffrey
I just reregistered your product because I upgraded to LR8.0. I used the new registration number but getting message that it is “Invalid registration code” I have tried multiple times and have closed and reopened LR. What should I do?

Did you perhaps delete the plugin files after installing Lightroom?” You actually have to leave the files where they are after pointing the plugin manager at them (which means you want to move them to somewhere permanent prior to that). Hi, I just donated after upgrading Lightroom Classic to version 8. I tried to install the latest plugin but a dialog ‘ not recognising this schema’ , or words to that effect keep coming up. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

From San Francisco. I’ve accumulated 1,000s of dng image files in my Lightroom folders on a Mac. Is there an “easy” way of viewing the images and metadata without a knowledge of Lightroom? OR, is there an “easy” way, meaning not enormously time consuming, of extracting jpgs and metadata of printable quality? I know about Export, but that would take lots of time with the quantity I have. I’m not a computer techie, so I’d appreciate any replies to be as simple as possible. Thank you for your time.
I’m a bit confused about exactly what you’re asking, but a DNG processed in Lightroom contains the initial source pixels, and metadata instructions about the develop changes you’ve applied, so the only way to see the result of that as a JPEG is to load it into Lightroom or Photoshop’s ACR, and export a JPEG copy. The simplest would be to start the export from Lightroom before going to bed, then collecting the results in the morning. —Jeffrey
For Jeffry, the dng will appear in your LR catalogue just like any other file. You can see what it looks like in either the Library module or the Develop module. You can see the metadata in Library view by selecting “metadata” in the menu at the top of the window. You do not need to export them as jpegs in order to see them and examine the metadata.
But you do need to export them as jpegs to have them as jpegs 😉 —Jeffrey

Are you able to use the Lightroom Flickr plugin to publish to more than one Flickr account? I manage multiple flicr accounts and cant seem to create different publish services for each of those accounts? I get the error:
Flickr login aborted: WRONG USER. The publish service is for Yaw (Flickr internal id “XXXXXXXXX”). Please be sure you are logged in as that user in your browser, then try again.
Is this prevented on purpose?
Each publish service is unrelated to the others, and each can be to a different Flickr account, or the same. The account is tied to the publish service when it’s made, when first authenticating to Flickr near the top of the dialog. If it’s not working, please send a plugin log after encountering the error. —Jeffrey

With the most recent update to LRClassic (no longer called LR Classic CC), my jf zenfolio upload plugin has disappeared. The message on the export page says “Unable to Export: the “nil” plug-in is not installed or not functioning properly”. In my Lightroom settings under Export Presets, User Presets” there is a file titled “Zenfolio upload.lrtemplate”. So the uploader is there, just not recognized by LRClassic. Is there some way to make LRClassic recognize this again, or does there need to be a modification to the plugin?
A plugin ends with “.lrplugin”, so the upload template is unrelated… that’s an export preset that you presumably made some time ago. You can just download the latest plugin zip from my site, then unzip and move the “zenfolio-jfriedl.lrplugin” item to where you want it to live on your system, then point the plugin manager at it and you should be good to go. —Jeffrey
I am preparing a substantial collection of images (perhaps 30,000)for my children. I easily make a backup of all types of files using a MAC software backup.
However, I want to use your folder publisher to create a live backup of all files exported as jpegs in current folder hierarchy so my children with no imaging software can view them with simple jpeg viewer.
My plan is to create smart collections exported as jpegs to a separate HD using your folder publisher plugin
I am editing images throughout the folders routinely so the update ability is critical.
My questions are: Can the publish folders plugin handle large collections (30,000 images)?
Have you done or have any knowledge of the time to publisjh a large collection?

Ostensibly it should be fine, though how fast things go depend on many things (what kind of photos, what kind of edit, and what kind of system). It’ll certainly take a while for the initial publish, but after that updates shouldn’t be too arduous. If your system can’t handle the initial 30k publish, you can select photos in smaller groups, hold down the alt/opt key too turn the [Publish] button into [Publish Select], and do them like that. —Jeffrey

Previously I was able to “Export as Previous” and LR would send the file to my same Zenfolio album as the last one I uploaded. (I am often uploading several images after editing to a clients album.) Now, however, when I choose Export as Previous it tries to send it to the same plugin (Photomatix in my case) that I used to edit a group of images. I know that the previous “Export” was into the Photomatix plugin, but before it knew that I wanted to export to the Zenfolio album and not the plugin.
Any ideas? Hope you are doing well in Kyoto.
I don’t know about this “Photomatix” plugin, but “Export as Previous” is pretty self explanatory….. except, that it may well be that a plugin (Photomatix) is doing an export silently under the hood, so you don’t realize that its export is now the “previous” export. —Jeffrey

Perhaps the upgrade failed? Try deleting the plugin completely, and doing a normal manual install. The “register” button is in the upper-right section of the plugin manager. Thanks for your kind gift(!) —Jeffrey
I have spent most of my free time this last year culling and editing my photos and I would like to start publishing viewable copies to hard drives for my family.
In order to minimize time for a specific ‘publish’ event, I plan on doing 3 or 4 different services, each with different collections.
Crucial question before I start figuring this out – Does the collection publisher support smart collections?

– is the LR serial number in any way shown to you?
– if not, how do you tie the registration code to the LR serial number?

Yes, registration contacts my server and records info about the registration. However, the plugin, and hence my server, never knows the Lightroom serial number (or other sensitive number; not all installs of Lightroom are done via a serial number). Rather, Lightroom provides a cryptographic hash of the serial number (or whatever) for tying things together. —Jeffrey

I can’t get to a register option because Creative Cloud does not show the plugin (Jf Collection Publisher) in the installed plugins tab (some other installed plugins also not shown), and searching all plugins with your name gives no results and and with “collection publisher” gives unordered heaps of results. The links from plugin manager in LR classic just bring me to this page.
A plugin has to be installed before it’ll show up in the Plugin Manager. Installation instructions are here. Yet, you must have some of my plugins installed, if there are links leading to this page, so I’m a bit confused. In any case, the “plugin home page” link in the upper right of the plugin manager brings you to the home page for the installed plugin. (Collection Publisher is here.)
My experience attempting to find a bulk local publish option to back up good jpegs of good pictures has been hellish, due mainly to LR Classic and LR behaviour (all photos removed from all collections when I thought I was removing from a published collection… this being propagated by LR cloud… what fun). I learnt the hard way not to install LR side by side with LR classic.
Anyhow I can work around with your plugin to get close to the functionality, but here are some suggestions:
1. Recognize books as collections for the MIRROR option. I mirrored a collection containing “books” in LR classic but the books weren’t recognized. I had to create a separate collection of all images in each book, and mirror that collection.
2. Recognize additions of collections to a collection set. It seems like I have to separately mirror each collection of “finished” photos separately.
Will additions of new images to a mirrored collection be recognized and published?

Unfortunately, Lightroom doesn’t give a plugin access to books. As for collection sets, I see what you’re saying and it’s not impossible, but the whole “mirroring” thing is so square-peg-into-a-round-hole kludgy as it is, I’m reticent to complicate it further, for fear of breaking everything. —Jeffrey
Seems like everytime I use this I have to re-register. ( I don’t use it that often, and maybe adobe updates are invalidating it more often than expected) And I get that PayPal minimum payment of $1, not $0.01) Is there any strategy that could keep it active longer?
I think I found a work around. If I use the payment button instead of the worldwide donation button it allows $0.01.
Thanks Jeffrey for the plugin. I have had to re-register because I had my machine rebuilt. Just to let you know the minimum donation at PayPal has changed, it is now $1 USD – you may want to update your documentation to reflect that.

The minimum is still one cent, but for reasons I don’t understand, some folks following the link from this page are presented with a $1 minimum. But as I mention in the warning box just above the buttons, you can get around it by creating a transaction not from the buttons. —Jeffrey
I am trying to re-register the zenfolio plugin. I have paid 2 different donations and each code it gives mea “registration failed” error. i have uupdated to the most recent plug in and it is still not working. what am i doing wrong?

I tried to re-register for Lightroom 11 using a credit card. I no longer have a Paypal account (but did have it in the past). I tried a Visa and a Mastercard and two different e-mail addresses, but I always run into a ‘something went wrong’ screen without any further reason. Maybe a problem with Paypal? Will try again later.
Whatever it is, it’s on PayPal’s side because my stuff has no part in the transaction until it’s been completed and someone uses the registration code to register a plugin. PayPal can be frustrating. If it doesn’t work, drop me an email and I’ll figure something out. —Jeffrey

Would it be possible to allow the transaction id of a larger donation work multiple times ?
Explanation: On each major update (and with CC they seem to be more often) I’m re-registering 5 plugins. Instead of donating 5 x 1$ and selecting each time to disable pay pal’s builtin ripoff (currency conversion) and then searching the id I would prefer to donate 5$ and be allowed to use the transaction id 5 times.

Sorry for the hassle, but the way it’s worked for a decade is that I’m happy to permission a registration code for multiple plugins, but it’s a manual process. Just make a code with a transaction of any amount (including $0.01) and actually use it to register one plugin. Then send me an email with that code and your needs, and I’ll take care of it. —Jeffrey
I was hoping the Plugin would capture the Flash level when I select it manually. For example I would set the Flash to manual and dial in 1/2 (half the power). On the Plugin Flash Level it just says Normal
I don’t know what plugin you’re referring to, or what situation, but for anything to be able to present the flash data as you mention, the camera must encode it into the image metadata somehow. Perhaps it’s not. —Jeffrey

I suppose you’re talking about my Folder Publisher plugin. When you create a collection to hold the photos you want to send to the destination, set “Leading path components to strip” to “2”. —Jeffrey
