Presidential Visit means Big Hubbub

What a hubbub going on in Kyoto this week, the likes of which this little backwater nowhere-ville has not seen in its short 1,211 years. I live about a mile away from the old imperial grounds, upon which the Kyoto State Guest House is situated, in which President Bush will stay during his one-day visit (arriving tomorrow night, leaving the next night).

As far as I know, he's not planning on coming my direction at all, yet there's a policeman in bullet-proof vest on most every street corner around here (just standing around, looking, uh, vigilant). The President [...]

The Inequities of North-American Baseball

In the world of baseball this season, what's the difference between the Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres?

If you look at their records, there's not much difference. With San Diego at 82 wins and Washington at 81 wins, San Diego did better by one game (and that's over a 162-game season). San Diego, with their 82 wins, won their division (National League, Central) and guaranteed themselves a spot in the playoffs (where they promptly lost).

Washington, however, with their almost-identical record, happens to be in a different division (National League, East), and their 81 [...]

Family Portrait

"Mommy, Daddy, Baby Anthony, Wallet, and Car"

Anthony made this drawing at playcare. It's his first complex, well done, easily identifiable drawing, and as such, makes our heart melt in the way only a parent's can. (That's another way to say "I know you don't think it's particularly special"

The original is rather large (about 20 inches across the long side). Both Fumie and I have this picture as our computer desktop image (although because I prefer a generally dark background, I use a darkened version).

On the same day, Anthony also drew a solo [...]

I Forgot the Date

I knew today was the 11th, but I forgot that it was "9/11" until the priest mentioned it at mass.

I first heard of the events that 9/11 morning as I pulled away from my driveway in Cupertino, CA, and turned on the all-news radio station that I listened to during my commute. The announcers were watching live coverage on TV and not long after I started listening reported that the first tower was collapsing. At first I just assumed that I must be misunderstanding something, but by the time I arrived at work in Sunnyvale 20 minutes later, the [...]

They’re Popping Out Like Popcorn

Wonderful news: my sister Marci Kreta is now pregnant after years of trying. This follows on the heels of my niece Grace's birth three months ago. It certainly seems that a lot of friends have become pregnant or had babies in the last year or so. I sort of thought I'd hit this age when I was 25, but I'm glad I didn't, as it wouldn't have meant much to me then. (Your world view, and what you pay attention to, certainly changes once you have your own kid -- it's like you can suddenly see in color, but hadn't [...]
