Internet Explorer’s Selective Understanding of CSS

I've decided to take a gamble and Windows Update into SP2 and beyond again. I've done it a number of times in the past, to disastrous results (a system that's flaky even by Microsoft standards, crashing every few hours). I've been living at pre-SP2 for a long time, with a machine that crashes only every few days, but lately it's gotten worse. I made the mistake of using IE to see something that didn't seem to work in Firefox, and I wonder if I picked up something bad, because the machine seemed much more flaky after that.

So, I did [...]

Digital Image Color Spaces

I've written up a primer on Digital Image Color Spaces. It talks about color spaces such as sRGB and AdobeRGB, what they mean to the digital photographer, and how to use them.

Judging by the images I see posted on the forums at Digital Photography Review, there are a lot of very good photographers who don't understand this computer-related subject -- a subject that's become more relevant in this age of digital cameras and the Internet presentation of photographs.

It's been quietly part of my photography tech page for a while as I gathered comments [...]

Another Photo-Tech Writeup: NEF Compression

I've another tech-related photo writeup, this time on NEF (Nikon raw image format) compression.

In it, I look at detail lost during compression in a way I've never seen anyone do it, so if you have a high-end Nikon that can write compressed NEFs, you may find it interesting.

(See my Photo Tech page for more technical writeups related to photography.)

Maximum Aperture of the Nikon 18-200mm Throughout its Zoom Range

The only lens I own for my Nikon D200 is a Nikon "AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-200m F3.5-5.6G(IF)," also known as "the 18-200mm."

I really love it as a fantastic all-around lens, but at f/3.5-5.6, I find that it is sometimes a bit slow (that is, it doesn't let in enough light for me to use a fast-enough shutter speed). So, I've been thinking of getting a faster (allows in more light) lens for use in lower-light situations.

Because of its "18-200mm f/3.5-5.6" name, I know that my lens is f/3.5 at 18mm, and f/5.6 at [...]

Back to the Future: On the Terms “NFA,” “DFA,” and “Regular Expression”

In my previous post I dug up messages someone wrote almost 10 years ago, and in some places challenged what they wrote. In writing the post, I mostly wanted to document the thread that created the somewhat-famous "now you have two problems" quote, and the challenges and rebuttals I included are a bit unfair of me (being 10 years later, with little chance that the author would care to engage now in a debate about writings and technology 10 years old).

So, with that in mind I'd like to refute a comment made yesterday on the Slashdot review [...]
