Archive for the 'Tech' CategoryPosts relating to techie things In the thousands of posts and many years I've had this blog, I've only ever mentioned my Mastering Regular Expressions book a few times, most recently perhaps six years ago when I announced that the third edition was complete and available. 僕が書いた本「正規表現」は今週、英語版のe-bookは半額セールです。 For those not steeped in computer science, despite the linguistic feel to the name, it's a computer book about a very thin slice of text-processing technology of interest to a certain kind of programmer. I don't generally mention it here because this blog is about me, and not about artificially fanning sales for something I did; I want [...] View full post » I received an email today from someone at stippleit.com, asking whether I might be able to discuss Lightroom-plugin development with them. I get this kind of request fairly often. As is often the case, I had never heard of them, so I checked out their website. They have a video on the home page claiming that with their service, you can keep track of your photos on the web wherever they go, no matter what anyone does to them. This seems fanciful (impossible) to me, but we all know Author Clark's third law ("Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from [...]
When I bought my laptop (an Apple MacBook Pro) several years ago, I powered it on for a few seconds to make sure it at least booted, then shut it down and replaced the stock 500GB drive with a 1TB drive of my own, then installed the OS. It worked great, but after a few years the machine started to feel sluggish, as if I was suddenly using Windows. The disk I'd put in was big, but also slow (5,200RPM), so maybe I'd reclaim some speed by using an SSD (solid-state disk)? When I realized that I could replace the [...] View full post » Let me say up front that I know the photos on this post are ridiculous. I think the type is ridiculous even when done seriously (e.g. in a "fashion" catalog), but all the more so when done by someone my age. I'm just trying to learn to cut loose a little while also learning about off-camera flash; I'd appreciate if your laughs are with me instead of at me. As I noted last month in "Trying a Little Formal Portraiture" and a couple of weeks ago in "Impromptu Portraiture Practice", I'm interested in improving my ability to take portraits. [...] View full post » Last week my blog had a slight bit of drama that illuminated a bit how some of the big tech news sites work internally. It started when I was reading my normal news sites and came across a surreal article on PetaPixel, a large photography-related news site that I follow daily. The article was surreal because it was claimed to be written by me (though it most certainly wasn't), using one of my photos to illustrate a point about browser color management. The subject of the short article was related to a sub-topic covered in my 2006 writeup "Introduction to [...] View full post » |
