Random Pics From Our Ise Trip

Here are a few random pictures from our end-of-year mini trip (related posts: Ryokan Food, and Anthony in a Yukata).

I'll start with the first picture I took, from the driveway of the ryokan, just after we arrived (about 40 minutes after sunset). The wind off the ocean was really really REALLY strong -- I had to struggle to close the car door against it -- and cold. It was facing into this wind that I snapped this shot before heading in. (If you squint, you can see the next landfall, Indonesia, about 2,500 miles away.)

During an outing on [...]

Some Color To Counter Feeling the Blues

I've had this cold for a week that's just left me feeling totally blah, with a mild headache and without an ounce of energy. Luckily, it doesn't take much energy or brain to sit in front of a computer, and so I thought I'd try to mix in some other colors with the blue this cold has left me feeling.

Here are some colorful shots from one outing a month ago.

The contrast and shadows in the last one grow on me as time goes.

The second-to-last, looking up at a tall tree, is interesting in that you can see [...]

Colorful Leaves and Colorful Kimono

While on the short outing last week that yielded the surreal foliage image, I happened upon this scene. While sitting on my scooter, I whipped out my camera and took this picture.

I have no idea what they were waiting for; I doubt it was their transportation, since it was a one-way street heading in the direction they're looking. The street was positively packed with people, so the few cars that were around were going very slowly. I was lucky to get a clear shot.

On the temple grounds is a temple-run preschool (the sign on the [...]

Photoshop’s “Darken” Blend Mode (and more fall-foliage desktops)

This post describes how I made the funky-color Kyoto fall leaves image from the other day.

I'd wanted to check out the vine growing through a bamboo fence again, in afternoon light (as opposed to the morning shade I'd seen it in before), so I went back on Wednesday afternoon. It was a productive visit, with a few shots of the fence that will certainly find their way here in the future. However, the subject of today's post is what I saw when I looked up.

Kyoto's impressive autumn colors are in full force now, but there are [...]

The Color of Kyoto — Desktop Background

This perhaps looks like a painting or a photo with a painting effect applied, but it's actually a combination of three photos I took yesterday, with no other special effects added. I'll describe how I made it in a later post; it's my hope for now that you'll simply be able to enjoy it.

The part shown above is just a small portion of the whole image, so that I could show some detail lost during the reduction required to fit a picture onto my blog. Even at that, it's from a version that was reduced to 25% of the [...]
