Where Has the Basic Sense of Right and Wrong Gone?

Some things just leave me totally dumbfounded....

Carolyn Wright has an interesting article on her Photo Attorney blog: Update on the Lawsuit against Benjamin Ham for Photographing Private Property. It's about the legal wranglings surrounding a photographer who took a pretty photo of some trees while trespassing on private property. The owners of the property sued him to stop selling copies of that pretty photo, and much legal paperwork ensued.

There was, apparently, no dispute over whether the photographer, Benjamin Ham, trespassed on private property ("passing through locked gates and ignoring 'no trespassing' signs") in order to make his photograph, [...]

Lightroom Plugin: Run-Any-Command Export Filter

Well, the Lightroom plugin that I released yesterday was mostly a waste of time, but a commenter reminded me that I still hadn't written a "Run Any Command" plugin for Lightroom 2, to complement the piglet of the same name that I released for Lightroom 1 just over a year ago.

So, I put my nose to the grindstone and pounded this out today:

Like the preview-cache image-extraction plugin that I release yesterday, I have no need for this myself, but this is one that I know at least one person will appreciate. 🙂

Lightroom Plugin: Catalog Preview-Image Extraction Tool

Well, if anyone needed convincing just how much of an idiot I am, here it is....

I spent half my time last week being sick with a cold, and the other half working on a new plugin for Lightroom that I knew I'd never use myself, nor would it be of any interest to most people.

This plugin allows you to extract as individual JPG files the internal preview images that Lightroom makes for a catalog. If you don't have your original image files handy (because you've deleted them, or you forgot to bring the drive that contains them with [...]

Pushing Lowlight-Photography Limits: The Atta Terrace Hotel at Night

After getting my Nikon D700 and putting its low-light capabilities to the test (see: "Impossible Photography: No Light, No Tripod, No Hope. D700 and a 50mm f/1.2" and "A Few More D700 f/1.2 Night Shots") I quickly expanded my understanding of the lighting conditions in which I could do handheld photography. In exploring this new territory, I often pushed too far and ended up with poor results, but surprisingly often I got results that would have been considered impossible just a couple of years ago, such as Anthony blowing out birthday candles, or riding his bike at dusk, or doing [...]

Coming of Age Day : Portraits

Continuing from yesterday's post, Japan's Coming of Age Day Holiday Spectacle, here are some portrait-type shots I was able to get. Let me reiterate, though, that I was scrambling to get anything, having gotten there and hour and a half after the ceremonies had ended, and didn't have time to scout locations that would give me both a good background and steady stream of photographic fodder. So, I got what I could, where I could, when I could.

I had noticed a sliver of light from the setting sun make its way between buildings, and saw this girl approaching, so [...]
