Archive for the 'Camera Stuff' CategoryAbout cameras, equipment, and postprocessing techniques Since writing "A Few Polarization-Filter Examples" several years ago, I've been meaning to do a post on a polarization filter's effects when shooting fall foliage. Over the years I've mentioned some effect or other of a polarization filer on my blog (such as here, here, and here), but I'm only now getting to filling in a huge deficiency of my 2007 post on making the best of bright light in fall-color photography by demonstrating how useful a polarizing filter can be when shooting foliage. While at the Yoshiminedera Temple south of Kyoto during various trips last year, I did something [...] View full post » Wow, what an ordeal. It started a month or so ago when I decided to put some of my photos on my iPad and iPhone, and found that it was harder to do well than I would have thought. A lot harder. A month later, finally, and I have a good workflow. It turns out that I ended up writing a new Lightroom plugin ("Crop for iPad", which I've just released), and updated two others, geoencoding support and my Tree Publisher. All just to get reasonable copies of my photos on my iPad and iPhone. I wrote up my experiences [...] View full post » Rummaging through my ever expanding archive of not-yet-inspected images, I found some from a December visit to Kyoto's Shogunzuka overlook, a short drive from my place. I've posted shots from up there many times, such as "Kyoto, From Shogunzuka, at Night" and "Today's Sunset in Kyoto: Ho-Hum & Yawn" and a dozen others that the nearby photos link bring up, but for every time a visit produces a post, nine others don't. I often pop up hoping to be there for a killer sunset only to leave empty handed, but I'll usually snap a few shots anyway out of habit, [...] View full post » I can't believe it's been a week since I last posted... time has just evaporated as I've been working on a new Lightroom project. Taking a break from that, and realizing that Kyoto is just a few weeks from the start of its most glorious fall-foliage season, I thought I'd dip into my archives from last year for some "Fall Foliage Preview" shots for this year. I was dumbfounded to find several thousand photos from a bunch of outings that I'd not even looked at yet. Always just too busy. Anyway, I was futzing with a throw-away photo in Lightroom, [...] View full post » Looking over photos from the Ikebana show I mentioned yesterday, I came across this shot with not a single thing in focus, but somehow I really like its mood. The closest edge is the least out of focus, but everything being out of focus makes the whole thing seem dreamy. I tend to be partial to the "sliver of focus" effect (as seen here, here, here, and here), but this takes it even further by having the "in focus" part not even in focus. It's almost like a painting. This has only a little post processing, in Lightroom. I set [...] View full post » |
