Well, I fear this will continue the string of uninspired “What am I?” quizes I've had lately, but it's worth a try.

I think…. this pattern on the floor, is created form rain falling on the sand, which create some little holes. But I don’t know what create this so regular shape from something like a roof ?
Hope it is right 🙂
Looks like stamped and colored concrete sidewalk.
Drips off a pergola or other overhead structure ?
Rain pattern dripped through from overhead walkway/bridge?
At first i was gonna say dirt overlaid on top of cobbled path… but then I started thinking, “erosion control”. Is it the outline of an underlying grid of erosion control grating? (I was just in your neck of the woods Jeff — visited Kyoto and Daigo-ji this past week. 🙂
Aloha,

I would say that’s a pattern made from the dripping rain of an overhead lattice. Maybe?
Some sorta watering system in the ground.
The unsurprising answer is on this post.
