Melting Willpower with the Melty Goodness of Matherz’ Truffles

Since the beginning of summer I've changed my food lifestyle to generally avoid carbs... I don't eat rice, potatoes, breads, fruits, desserts, etc., unless it would be socially inconvenient. (If I'm with friends and everyone's in the mood for pizza, I'll go and enjoy pizza.) It's worked out really well for me (I took these self portraits not long after starting) and by finding low-carb things I like, have not really felt cravings, or that I'm missing out or sacrificing. It's a lifestyle, not a temporary diet.

But today I fell off the wagon because I made the mistake of trying a free sample of an Alaüs Mathez Truffe fantaisie (Fancy dusted truffle) at Costco (which yes, are here in Japan).

It was amazingly pure and creamy, but didn't leave an overly-sweet after taste... a true tight-wire balancing act between pleasure and eatability that must be as good for the company's bottom line as it is bad for my waistline. Like most everyone who tried one, I had to buy a box.

The box held two 500g tins (exactly like this, except because it's Costco, it was ⅓ the price), so I came home with 1kg (2.2lbs) of delicious French chocolate that I didn't have the willpower to not eat.

I've shared some with the family and Fumie's folks, but still have an unopened tin here in my room just daring me to eat it in one sitting.

Weak. I am weak....

If you would like, I’ll take it off your hands and spare you the temptation. You wouldn’t want to lose that svelte body of yours just for a bit of chocolate. Mine is far from svelte, so it won’t make much difference if I eat it (and, of course, sharing it with anyone else around as it is nearly Halloween).

Actually, the word ‘svelte’ is the wrong word to describe your body. Sorry about that. I think ‘toned’ is a much better word. “Svelte’ means slender and elegant, which probably more suits Fumie than you.

Would you mind sharing with us your diet logic and some additional reading or books you used (maybe worth a post…)?

Will post about it next month…. —Jeffrey

Oh, interesting… I didn’t realize Japan had Costco. 🙂

Your one membership is good in any Costco worldwide… according to this page on their site, they’re in nine countries. —Jeffrey

How many people would go to Costco in more than one country? You can buy enough of anything for a few months, so it isn’t exactly a vacation destination…

Not many, I’m sure; I was just noting that it’s allowed. —Jeffrey

Hmmm, those tins look like they might fit nicely in a suitcase dedicated just for them when you visit Ohio in December. I personally am not too concerned about the carbs. I am in shape…round is a shape.

There’s are Costcos in Cleveland and Strongsville… I’ll bring my card. —Jeffy

I thought you were going to respond with, “But I eat my 20 lbs of nuts in less than a week!”

Sounds like you are on keto diet. And bad carb gravings are there in that diet. When you slip you actually could slip BAAADLY 🙂 like that 😀
I heard that some bodybuilder that was on keto diet slipped really badly and ate 12 000cal worth of unnamed food items 😀
I have tried few diets now fibrous low GI carb diet and now I’m on carb cycling diet. I’m feeling that first one seems to be better since I didnt have any major gravings and actually could just taste something and stop there. But now in this carbs cycling I have had few slips and it’s harder to not slip off wagon. But I still want to test how keto diet feels like and how I respond to it. My friend is in keto diet now and has lost around 1kg week and he has lost aroud 10-14kg now total. But he has also said that slips are really easy to happen and when you get that graving it’s hard to stop it.

I’m not on a diet… it’s just my consumption lifestyle to generally avoid carbs. I don’t have much in the way of cravings, but I do lament at times over all the tasty stuff I now pass over (for other tasty stuff, of course). It’s not a religion, so I’ll eat it if I really want, and in this case I had about 10 of the candies. —Jeffrey

My thoughts about word diet seems to differ little. Diet per se is not to lose weight but it’s rather more like how one eats and what. If I do want to loose weight I just drop my calories in.
I think it is more like eating habit. Everyone follow for the most part some kind of eating habits. So they are on some diet.

The problem is that “diet” has two unrelated meanings. One is what we are talking about… the general pattern of consumption, such as “the woodland thrush’s diet consists of worms and berries”. Another meaning is a temporary regime of specialized intake (low-sodium, low-calorie, high-protein, etc.) intended to reach a goal. (A third meaning is that it’s the English word for 国会, the Japanese national legislature, but that’s beside the point 🙂 —Jeffrey
