Anthony had a short day at school today, so while he was there, I spent<\/span> half an hour at the Heian Shrine again for all the 7-, 5-, and 3-year-old\nkids dressed up in fancy clothes for the “7-5-3 festival”, as I mentioned<\/span> earlier in the\nweek<\/a> (and followed up\non<\/a> yesterday).<\/p>\n\n\n

After school, Anthony and I visited Zak<\/a> so Anthony and his son\nGen could play, and Zak and I could<\/span> make boring small talk about cameras for a few<\/span> hours.<\/p>\n\n

Zak lives on the 15th floor of a building<\/span> with nice views...<\/p>\n\n

Under those trees are the huge set of monkey bars briefly shown here<\/a>, as well as\nother fun playground stuff<\/a>. The river<\/span> with the zipper-looking embankments was a place<\/span> that Gen and\nAnthony played in last\nspring<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The same golden light of the setting sun hit the frosted wall of windows\nin his building's “kids room” (an empty room where kids can tear around),\nfilling the room with magical light.... a soft,<\/span> golden glow. Anthony had\nbeen playing with Gen and some other kids, and had worked up a sweat<\/span> and\ntook his shirt off, so he was “glowing” inside and out. By the time<\/span> I went<\/span> and got my camera,\nit was mostly gone, but it was sort of like this...<\/p>\n\n

After a delicious pasta dinner with Zak's special\ncooking-since-last-night stew-like sauce, Anthony and I headed<\/span> home. But on the<\/span> way, we stopped by The Eikando Temple, where their fall-foliage evening\nlightup event was starting (and running for the next few weeks). The dad<\/a> of one of Anthony's\nclassmates, Yoko-chan<\/a>,\ntold me about it and said that they were going this evening, so we stopped\nby to see them and the lightup.<\/p>\n\n

It's early in the season, but already spectacular...<\/p>\n\n

The Eikando Temple is one of the most wonderful for fall colors. Most of\nthe photos on this Bonanza\nof Fall-Foliage Desktop Backgrounds<\/a> post were taken there, and this Colorful Leaves and Colorful\nKimono<\/a> shot from two years ago was snapped at one of its side\nentrances.<\/p>\n\n

Kids, of course, couldn't care less, but they had a fun<\/span> time playing...<\/p>\n\n

Conveniently, there was an area where they could run around without\nbothering anyone else, and they (Anthony, Yoko-chan, and her little brother\nTaro<\/a>)\ndid...<\/p>\n\n

I continue to be impressed by the low light prowess of the Nikon\nD700<\/a>. All these<\/span> shots are handheld in available light (or, in some\ncases, the lack thereof).<\/p>\n\n

These leaves were backlit by a bright floodlight, so were less of a challenge.<\/span>.. I needed<\/span> only ISO 2800 for a reasonable<\/span> shot...<\/p>\n\n

All the floodlights here are normal “white” incandescent floodlights\n(which actually puts a warmish<\/span> glow on things.... a “white” incandescent\nlight is not actually white, even though it may look that way). No color<\/span> filters or anything. It's really<\/span> pretty.<\/p>\n\n

Yoko-chan's daddy<\/a> suggested that I make<\/span> a brief<\/span> stop over\nat the Nanzen Temple (where I visited<\/span> last weekend<\/a>\nwith Thomas) because, he said, the line waiting to enter that temple's\nevening lightup event would make for a good<\/span> photograph...<\/p>\n\n
