My post earlier this week about our weekend trip to Kibune with\nThomas<\/a> ended with us eating dango<\/i> at one of the many roadside\nrestaurants. In the background<\/span> of the final\nphoto<\/a> on that post, you can see a big<\/span> gear, perhaps four feet across. It's a big<\/span>, clearly very old<\/i> wooden gear.<\/p>\n\n

Even the pegs used to hold the pieces together, and the tapered pins\nused to hold the pegs in tightly<\/i> are wood. It's amazing.<\/p>\n\n

It was a dark, overcast day of intermittent rain, and an hour before\nsunset deep in the narrow valley that is Kibune, so ambient-light\nphotography would have been impossible without the D700's amazing low-light\nprowess<\/a>. When I got<\/span> home, I was shocked<\/span> how well these images turned out.<\/p>\n\n

I asked about the gear at the restaurant where it's now being used as\ndecoration, and they had no clue. I shouldn't<\/span> have been surprised, seeing\nas they had the two huge stone wheels of an old rice mill (similar to this\nsmall coffee\nmill<\/a>) set up upside-down as some kind of birdbath\/fountain. I explained<\/span> to them what it was, and they nodded vacantly. I guess<\/span> they just aren't\ngeeky enough to appreciate old technology like I do.<\/span> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

As a bonus,<\/span> here's a shot<\/span> of the kusaridoi<\/i> (\u9396\u6a0b)<\/span> “rain chain”\nhanging from the edge of the gutter. When it rains, water flows from the\ngutter down the set of chained cups, creating somewhat of a waterfall<\/span>\neffect.<\/p>\n\n

These are fairly common to see around town... especially temples and\nshrines, but often enough in a private<\/span> residence or business as well.\nThey're pricy, though: I found<\/span> a place<\/span> selling some<\/a>\nfor about $600 for a nine<\/span>-foot length.<\/p>\n\n

Yet, as common as they are, no one seems to know what they're called. I have a<\/span> horrible memory for language (and for many things, as my wife will\nattest), so often find myself asking around what these are called. I've yet\nto find someone who knows, so every time I really<\/span> want to know, I have to<\/span>\nlook it up.<\/p>\n\n

Kusaridoi<\/b>. Maybe I'll remember this time.<\/p>\n\n
