You might remember my post two months ago showing a Nikon D3 shutter release in\nsuper-slow motion<\/a>, using original images ingeniously created by Marianne Oelund<\/a>. With them, I created<\/span> an interactive movie where you can scrub the mouse side to side,\nback and forth, progress the movie in either direction at any speed you\nlike. I also described<\/span> how she made the frames, along with some stats about\nthe shutter timing and speed.<\/p>\n\n

If you're at all into photography, it's fairly interesting, and it's\nbeen by far my most popular post, and two months later, it still gets\nthousands of pageviews a day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

No thanks, I might<\/span> add, to the jerks over at Gizmodo.com.<\/p>\n\n

I found out yesterday that Matt Buchanan, one of the editors there,\napparently created and posted a non<\/span>-interactive movie of my interactive\napplication in action. This was a very<\/span> un-cool thing to do. Yes, it was\nhighly illegal because he had no copyright to do that, but the main problem\nas far as I'm concerned is that he dumbed down the interesting<\/b>\npresentation I worked<\/span> hard to create. It's interesting<\/i> to interact\nwith the shutter, er, interactively<\/i>. It's interesting<\/i> to see how\nMarianne made the frames. It's interesting<\/i> to read some of the stats\nassociated with this.<\/p>\n\n

Matt and Gizmodo took all that away from everyone who saw their post who\nhadn't already seen mine. It was way<\/span> uncool, and I didn't<\/span> appreciate it. A big organization<\/span> like them (they have fourteen<\/i> editors!) should know\nbetter, if for no other reason that, well, it's illegal<\/i>, but you'd\nexpect even more clue from people who are supposed to “get”\ntechnology. Sigh.<\/p>\n\n

People use\/borrow\/steal my content all the time and I've never been\nbothered too much by it, but the dumbing down really angered me, so I sent<\/span>\nmy first ever takedown request:<\/p>\n\n

You hide all the interesting\/fun experience I created<\/span> behind a bland<\/span> movie,\nand you hide all kinds of interesting facts about it from the user.<\/p>\n\n

If you'd like to keep the post with a link<\/span> to my original post, that's\ncertainly your prerogative, but please remove the movie.<\/p>\n\n

I received a reply in short order: “Pulled the post.<\/b>”<\/p>\n\n

That's it. No greeting, no discussion, no semblance of\n“sorry” or acknowledgement that what he did was uncool. Three\nwords. Basically, a “fine then, fuck you<\/i>” attitude.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

He did pull the whole post instead of just his lame video, which I guess<\/span>\nshouldn't have surprised me. I mean,<\/span> if he cares so little about the\nreadership of his site that he'd make and present a dumbed<\/span> down version, I guess<\/span> he shouldn't mind all the broken links to his site that removing the\npost has created.<\/p>\n\n

What a jerk.<\/p>\n\n
