Next Saturday is shichi go san<\/i> – “7 5 3” – a\ntraditional<\/span> festival celebrating kids aged 7, 5, and 3 years old. (It's\ntaking a will<\/span> of steel to refrain from the pun of calling this festival\n“odd”.) Wikipedia has a short<\/span> little writeup describing\nit<\/a>, how often it's the first time for kids to dress up in fancy kimono\n(girls) or hakama (boys), and such.<\/p>\n\n

Although it's not until next week, this past weekend found the Heian\nShrine filled with kids all dressed up and cute as a button.<\/span> My friend Thomas<\/a>, in town\njust for the weekend, called my attention to the concentrated cuteness, and\nalthough we didn't have much time before I had<\/span> to run him to the train\nstation for his trip back to Korea, I stopped<\/span> by the shrine for a bit<\/span>\nand snapped a few<\/span> pictures.<\/p>\n\n

Generally speaking, the kids were cute because they were dressed up\nin<\/i> adult styles, not dressed as if they were<\/i> adults. Their\n“kidness” was allowed to remain. I've had Anthony dressed up in a\nsuit<\/span><\/a> and I thought<\/span> it was cute because he was still a kid.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Some of the people we saw at the shrine didn't quite get the\ndistinction, and way overdid it, piling on accessories and makeup in an\napparent attempt to obliterate any last remnants of childhood left showing\nin their child. You could<\/span> see it in their style choices, in how they\ninteracted with their kid, and in the lack of joy in the kid. Sad.<\/p>\n\n

I tended to not want to photograph such kids, but the shot above is one,\ndressed to the nines, sans cuteness, with painted face and all...<\/p>\n\n

There was a large group of Chinese tourists who seemed like any tourists\nyou'd see anywhere, except for the odd habit of running up in mobs to\nsomeone, taking dozens of pictures over the course of a minute<\/span> or three,\nbut never making eye contact or acknowledging that the subject they're\nphotographing is a living<\/span> object. Thomas and I, being pretty much the only\nwhite people around, were the subject of this slightly creepy behavior for\na while.<\/span> I tried<\/span> to engage them with smiles or eye-contact or the one word\nof Chinese I know<\/span> (“thank you”), but it's as if we were on the darkened\nside of a one<\/span>-way mirror, and they never even knew we were there. Odd.<\/p>\n\n

Actually, the little boy was full of smiles posing with his sister, but\nthat one shot caught him with a look<\/span> that reminded me of how I felt<\/span> when we\nwere forced to pose for family pictures back in the 70s. The one shot<\/span>\ndoesn't represent the reality of the scene, so it's totally unfair to pluck\nthis picture out of context like this.... but it's fun. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

(Of course, now<\/i> as an adult I appreciate<\/span> that my folks' forced us\nto pose for Christmas card pictures every year, because now as an adult I\ncan<\/span> treasure them. But boy, it was painful at the time.)<\/p>\n\n
