An old friend from my days working at Omron<\/a> in the early 90s visited Kyoto\ntoday. He's German<\/span> and lives in Germany, and I\nhadn't<\/span> seen him since he attended my wedding in Kyoto in 1998, where he was\nthe only one to fly in from outside Japan. Along the same lines more than\n10 years later, he took the opportunity of a business<\/span> trip to Korea to pop\nover to Kyoto for the weekend, just in time for the start of some nice fall\ncolors.<\/p>\n\n

Unfortunately, the weather was dark and gloomy for much of the\nafternoon, with intermittent rain. By early<\/span> dusk, we found ourselves at the\nNanzen Temple, where the enveloping darkness made the though of taking\npictures a joke.<\/span> But I have<\/span> my Nikon D700 with its amazing low-light\nperformance<\/a>, so I thought<\/span> I'd snap a few<\/span> shots and see how they came\nout. Most of these shots were taken at ISO 6400.<\/p>\n\n

The answer is “mostly muddy”. The lamp in<\/span> the shot above is in focus,\nbut the thin depth of field resulting from the f<\/span>\/2.8\naperture – often a wonderful<\/span> composition tool – leaves the\nfiery red leaves at the right out of focus, and hence a sloppy,<\/span> muddy\nmess.<\/p>\n\n

The shot of Thomas that leads this post was taken in front of the\nentrance to what I believe<\/span> is someone's house\/garden. It was very<\/span> pretty inside:<\/p>\n\n

Anthony didn't care about the pretty leaves, of course. He really<\/span> enjoyed pushing his bike up a slight<\/span> slope, then riding back down at an\nunsafe speed.<\/p>\n\n\n

The tree in the photo above is part of a pair<\/span> that are particularly\nvibrant, and they garner crowds of photographers every year because they're\nthe prettiest trees around (at least within the nearest, oh, 50 yards or\nso). They appeared on my blog last year's Touch of Color from the Nanzen\nTemple<\/a> post. Also, I think<\/span> this\nsun-through-the-leaves shot<\/a> is of the same pair.<\/p>\n\n

Even in the mid-summer they look pretty. They're the trees on the right\nin this shot of\nFumie and Anthony lighting incense<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Anthony, again, doesn't care. He's riding<\/span> his bike....<\/p>\n\n

This shot reminds me of one of my all-time favorites, taken from the same spot looking down the same path:\n“Pure Joy<\/a>”<\/p>\n\n

In the evening, Thomas and I went out for foods he remembered from his\ntime in Japan 15<\/span>+ years ago, okonomiyaki<\/a> and yakisoba<\/a>. It was most<\/span>\nexcellent. We talked<\/span> over beers, and although we hadn't seen each other in\n10 years, and we now have a wife<\/span> and kids (he has girls ages 5 and 6), it\nfelt like no time had passed.<\/p>\n\n

We'll get together tomorrow as well, although the weather looks to be a\nbit<\/span> iffy. We may head<\/span> out to the Giouji Temple<\/a>. He's been using<\/span> this photo<\/a>\nas his desktop background, and his coworkers have teased him that the white\nthing in the center is a mailbox,<\/span> so he wants to go see what it is. I think<\/span> it's a pathway<\/span> light, but I'm not sure. We'll see...<\/p>\n\n
