Looking in my photo archives, I see we<\/span>'ve done this type of thing a few<\/span>\ntimes before. We did it<\/span> last year<\/a>, and the year before<\/a> as well. It's almost<\/span> as if we do this every year. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

I'm not all that happy with the photos... the lighting was horrible\n(mixed incandescent and fluorescent) which makes for a white-balance nightmare<\/a>,\nand for the dark, candle-lit shots.... I dunno.<\/span>... I just expected<\/span> more\nfrom a D700<\/span> that can take\npictures in the dark<\/a>. One of the<\/span> problems was nailing focus... the lack\nof a good<\/span> focus screen on the D700 is maddening.<\/p>\n\n

And when I had the autofocus Nikkor 24<\/span>-70\/2.8 on there during the\nbrighter times, it still had a lot<\/span> of issues in letting the shutter release\nafter focusing. It focused<\/span> just dandy, but it didn't think<\/i> it did,\nand so held the shutter back. Maddening. I eventually<\/span> switched to manual\nfocus, but then we go back to the first problem.<\/p>\n\n

Then there are problems that I brought on myself by not paying attention\nto what was going on. Every single shot of him and the cake shows what\nlooks like only five candles. I just got<\/span> really really<\/i> unlucky with\nthe candle alignment WRT my position. Sigh. Because I wanted<\/span> the first\nphoto on his “turns six years old” post to show six candles, I went ahead<\/span>\nand “enhanced” that first photo by adding an extra candle and two extra\nflames. (All in Lightroom, no less.) Had I not<\/span> done it, it would have\nappeared at first glance to have only four candles. As it is<\/span> now, upon very\nclose inspection, you'll see seven candles.<\/p>\n\n

Then to add insult to injury, there's apparently a bug<\/span> in the\ncolor-management support in Firefox 3<\/span> that, when color-management is\nenabled, causes the darkest parts of the candle-lit photos to be rendered\nin a horrible<\/span> pixelated, striped way that I'm at a loss<\/span> to explain. Firefox\non the Mac works fine, as does Firefox on Windows if I turn<\/span> off color\nmanagement. Sigh.<\/p>\n\n
