It didn't move for the first two days, so\nwhen Arthur told me that it was just preparing for the &#8220;next stage&#8221;, <span class='nobr'>I figure<\/span> that would be &#8220;decomposition&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<p>But it eventually started eating the orange leaves we put in (kindly\nprovided by Arthur), and went in cyclic fits of eating, rest, and the\noccasional little caterpillar poopy. Anthony named her &#8220;\u30d7\u30ea\u30d7\u30ea\u3061\u3083\u3093&#8221;,\n(<i>puripuri-chan<\/i>)\nwhich, as far as Anthony is concerned, translates to something along the\nlines of &#8220;Little Wiggle-Butt.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>After a week or so, she suddenly changed into the much-more-attractive\ngreen thing shown in the picture above, which <span class='nobr'>I took<\/span> with <span class='nobr'>a 50mm<\/span> f\/1.2 lens\nattached to some extension tubes. <span class='nobr'>It was much<\/span> easier than using a <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2007-10-16\/609\">reversed lens for macro\nwork<\/a>, but the quality <span class='nobr'>I ended<\/span> up with is still pretty bad. <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> put\nmuch effort, but still, <span class='nobr'>I'd have had<\/span> better quality with less effort had <span class='nobr'>I\njust<\/span> used <span class='nobr'>a real<\/span> macro lens. Must get one.<\/p>\n\n<p>Anyway, after a while, she climbed upside-down onto <span class='nobr'>a branch,<\/span> hung on\nwith her bottom feet while suspending the top of her body with two thin\nthreads, and turned herself into a <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pupa#Chrysalis\">chrysalis<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>Her outer<\/span> body just morphed into <span class='nobr'>a cocoon<\/span>-like casing, in which she sat for almost two weeks.<\/p>\n\n<p>This morning at 9am she was still in there, but when <span class='nobr'>I looked<\/span> again an\nhour and <span class='nobr'>a half<\/span> later, she was out and stretching her wings.<\/p>\n\n<p>Anthony let her our when he got home from school. <span class='nobr'>She jumped<\/span> on his\nshirt for <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> moments, then flew over to <span class='nobr'>a tree.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>If I ever do get a decent macro lens, I'll try to get another\n<i>puripuri-chan<\/i> and take <span class='nobr'>a time<\/span>-lapse of her life....<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A month or so ago, Arthur gave us a black, blob-like, ugly little caterpillar perhaps half an inch long, and told us how to take care of it.
