{"id":966,"date":"2008-10-18T18:31:46","date_gmt":"2008-10-18T09:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-10-18\/966"},"modified":"2008-10-18T18:31:46","modified_gmt":"2008-10-18T09:31:46","slug":"note-to-mommy-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-10-18\/966","title":{"rendered":"Note to Mommy II"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<div class='img_right' style='text-align:center; margin-bottom:0; padding-bottom:0'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/Anthony-2008-10-17-Note-to-Mommy.png\" width=\"324\" height=\"450\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"iAnthony_2008_10_17_Note_to_Mommy\"\/>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Note from Anthony<\/span><\/div>\n\n<p>I mentioned in <a href=\"\/blog\/2008-10-15\/964\">Anthony's\nFirst All-by-Himself Letter<\/a> <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> days ago that while writing his first\nfull-fledged note all by himself, he'd made <span class='nobr'>a grammar<\/span> mistake in writing\nthe \u308f sound as \u308f when, due to its grammatical use in the sentence, it\nshould have been written as \u306f. <span class='nobr'>The alphabet<\/span> is remarkably regular, with\nonly <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> special rules like this. <span class='nobr'>Few as they<\/span> are, they need to be\nlearned and absorbed, so we lightly mentioned it to him in passing.<\/p>\n\n<p>I didn't expect it to be something that he really &#8220;got&#8221; for <span class='nobr'>a while,<\/span> but\nhe wrote it properly in his note the next day, seen at right.<\/p>\n\n<p>Actually, the situation came up twice in the note, and he wrote it\nproperly only the first time, but still, it's fast approaching the &#8220;better\nthan <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span> do&#8221; level. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n<style type='text\/css'>\n  #post966 blockquote { color: white }\n<\/style>\n\n<p>The note at right says:<\/p>\n\n     <blockquote>\n     Mommy,\n     <br\/>\n     Your favorite kind of vehicle would be what?\n     <\/blockquote>\n\n<p>I translated \u306e\u308a\u3082\u306e as &#8220;vehicle&#8221;, but there's got to be something\nbetter. Imagine <span class='nobr'>a book<\/span> for little boys named <i>Cars, delivery trucks,\nrockets, busses, cranes, bulldozers, police cars, planes, motorcycles,\ndragsters, race cars, bicycles, and more!<\/i>.
