Anthony has never really shown any interest in reading and writing (nor,\nfor that matter, much interest even in being read to<\/i>). It's been almost<\/span> a year<\/span> since he could write his name in English<\/a>\nand in Japanese<\/a>, but that's about as far as he's cared to take it.\nAs I've written before (How To Raise a Bilingual<\/span> Child<\/a>\nand\nMore on Raising a Bilingual<\/span> Child<\/a>), I am careful<\/span> not to ram\nlinguistics down his throat, lest he turn away from it.\n<\/p>\n\n

Many of Anthony's peers can read and write fairly well, but still, at\nhis age (a week<\/span> shy of turning six), I'm not concerned<\/span> with his inability\nto read and write. On the other<\/span> hand, his almost total disinterest<\/i>\nin them is<\/i> a growing<\/span> concern.<\/p>\n\n\n

So, we were amazed this morning that he, all by himself, before Fumie\nand I got<\/span> up, wrote a note<\/span> to Mommy. Fumie awoke to find it propped up\nagainst her computer, showed me, and we both dropped our jaw.<\/p>\n\n\n

It appears that he started writing on a Post<\/span>-It type note, then kept\nadding them as he continued the message. Sometimes he wrote in the wrong\ndirection, there's no punctuation, and a few<\/span> other mistakes, but wow, it's\njust wonderful<\/i> to us.<\/p>\n\n
