A view of Mt. Fuji, taken with my point-n-shoot from the window of a\nshinkansen<\/i> (bullet\ntrain<\/a>) traveling at about 250kph. This was from a trip<\/span> about a year<\/span> ago\nto Tokyo to see Kousuke\nAtari in concert<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

A point of trivia: I believe the river you can see in the background is\nan electrical dividing line: household current to the east of the river\n(Tokyo, Nagano, Sapporo...) is 50Hz, while that to the west (Kyoto, Osaka,\nNagoya, Hiroshima, Amami....) is 60Hz. The difference<\/span> matters less with\nmodern equipment, but old clocks and things with high-voltage engines (e.g.\nrefrigerators with their compressors) couldn't be used on “the other side”.<\/p>\n\n

Rickshaw are still commonly seen only in a few<\/span> areas of Japan, with\nwhere I live<\/span> in Kyoto being one of them. They're quite popular, both for\ncommon tourists and for wedding parties (an example of the latter can be\nseen here<\/a>; other posts\nwith rickshaw can be seen here<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>). I happened<\/span> to have\nsnapped this shot on the outing last December that produced my Making the Best of Bright\nLight in Fall-Color Photography<\/a> post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anthony's creative play last year, involving the train set he got when he turned five years old<\/a>, some\npacking Styrofoam, and some mini cars. If the mini<\/span> cars look familiar, it's because they appeared on an earlier post,\nAnthony the Valet<\/a>. I'm not really big on abstract shots, but for some reason I feel<\/span> partial\nto this shot I took<\/span> while standing on a pitching<\/span> ferry while traveling from\nthe mainland to Miyajima\nIsland<\/a>, during last fall's trip to see Kousuke Atari in concert for the\nfirst time (at the\nItsukushima Shrine<\/a> on Miyajima).<\/p>\n\n

Miyajima is a pretty area, and I ended<\/span> up with so many posts from that\ntrip that I created<\/span> a Miyajima\ncategory<\/a> on my blog.<\/p>\n\n

I visited<\/span> Nijo Castle for the first time last year, and despite having a\nbazillion<\/span> shots, I've yet to post more than some of its heavy wooden gate<\/a>, and one\ndesktop-background pretty\nautumn scene<\/a>. While visiting a friend's house, I was offered<\/span> coffee. I loved<\/span> the look\nof the presentation, of the cup on the old table with a nice<\/span> patina, so I just<\/span> had to snap a photo<\/span> of it. It was much<\/span> tastier than the $9 cup of coffee<\/a> I had<\/span> at a ritzy<\/span> Tokyo cafe.
