Earlier in the summer I posted about an old Ohio farmhouse<\/a>. The house<\/span> was expanded sometime during its life, but the original part dates\nfrom about the 1830s or so, long before plumbing and electricity and,\napparently, bolts. In the original<\/span> attic, you can see that wooden pegs were used\nto tie a horizontal<\/span> beam to its vertical support.<\/p>\n\n

It looks as if the wall and roof planks have been replaced over the\nyears, but the huge beams seem original, still showing marks from having\nbeen made with, I think,<\/span> an adze<\/a>. Here's the same beam as\nbefore, but to the right of the pegs...<\/p>\n\n

Most of the flooring area was covered with old carpet or something, but\nthe area immediately in front of the window was clear, showing the old warn\nfloorboards that are likely original. I thought<\/span> it might make an\ninteresting desktop background, so I tried<\/span> to get a clean<\/span> shot straight\ndown....<\/p>\n\n

I took the shot with a desktop-background in mind. Over the years I've\ncreated and posted a bunch<\/span> of desktop backgrounds ( desktop-background\nphotostream<\/a><\/span>  ·  desktop-background\nposts<\/a> ),<\/span> although it may well be only me who thinks something like this\nwould be interesting..... because I've yet to receive a single<\/span> comment\nabout someone else actually liking these.<\/p>\n\n

Getting this picture was comical. In order<\/span> to get my feet out of frame, I had to<\/span> lean waaaaaaay over, bracing myself against the sloping roof with\none hand, trying to hold the camera steady with another, dripping sweat the\nwhole time in the boilerroom that was this old farmhouse attic. Bonus\npoints for not impaling my skull on one of the many roofing nails\nprotruding from the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n

The area was immediately in front of the window, which caused the boards\nto glow bright with reflected light, so I used<\/span> a polarization filter<\/a> to\nreduce the reflections and enhance the rich appearance of the wood's grain\n\/ patina.<\/p>\n\n

Unfortunately, a polarization filter also acts to some extent like a\nmild<\/span> neutral-density filter (e.g. a dimmer,<\/span> like slightly smoked glass), so\nthat increased the challenge of the shot. Despite being right by the\nwindow, there really wasn't that much light. The window<\/span> was small, and once\nI got<\/span> rid of the glare with the filter, it was actually pretty dark,\nphotographically speaking. Note, for example, that the shot just before\nthis one was a 13-second<\/b> exposure.<\/p>\n\n

In the end, I had to<\/span> go to ISO1250, which is more than the Nikon D200 is\nreally very good at. (Had I had<\/span> my Nikon D700 at the time, this kind of\nshot would have been so\nmuch easier<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
