{"id":947,"date":"2008-09-26T12:18:06","date_gmt":"2008-09-26T03:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-09-26\/947"},"modified":"2008-09-26T12:18:06","modified_gmt":"2008-09-26T03:18:06","slug":"apple-customer-care-making-strides-in-automated-cluelessness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-09-26\/947","title":{"rendered":"Apple Customer Care: Making Strides in Automated Cluelessness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>I recently exchanged some messages with Apple's iTunes Customer Care\nmail-reading\/replying artificial-intelligence system. <span class='nobr'>As one might<\/span> expect,\nartificial intelligence systems are still not <i>quite<\/i> up to the task\nof replacing the cognitive powers of <span class='nobr'>a human,<\/span> but as you'll see in the\nprogressively-humorous transcript that follows, Apple's\nartificial-intelligence system has evolved enough to mimic the\nquintessential nature of human cluelessness.<\/p>\n\n<p>I contacted Apple to ask about <span class='nobr'>a restriction<\/span> in how one can pay for\nthings at iTunes. <span class='nobr'>Now that my<\/span> <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2008-09-04\/926\">PayPal nightmare<\/a> has been\nstraightened out, and now that <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2008-09-13\/933\"><span class='nobr'>I have<\/span> an iPhone<\/a>, <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> I'd get some cool apps for the phone at iTunes, paying with the money in my\nPayPal account.<\/p>\n\n<p>Unfortunately, it turns out that Apple allows PayPal accounts only if\nthe account has <span class='nobr'>a credit<\/span> card registered to it. Enter your account name and password and click Sign In. <span class='nobr'>If you no<\/span> longer have the password for this account, you can simply have the password reset by visiting Apple's iForgot page at:\n\nhttp:\/\/iforgot.apple.com\/<\/li>\n\n<li>Once signed in, choose &#8220;View My Account&#8221; from the Store menu.<\/li>\n\n<li>Click the Edit Payment Information button to  be taken to the Credit Card Information screen, and then skip to step 8.<\/li>\n\n<li>Since you don't have an account, choose &#8220;Create Account&#8221; from the Store menu.<\/li>\n\n<li>On the Edit Payment Information screen, select &#8220;PayPal&#8221; as your method of payment.\n\nNote: In order for you to set up your PayPal account for use on the iTunes Store, you are required to have <span class='nobr'>a valid<\/span> credit card associated with your PayPal account.<\/li>\n\n<li>Click the Continue button to be directed to the PayPal website. Follow the on-screen instructions.<\/li>\n\n<li> Once your Billing Agreement has been created, click the Return to Merchant button to return to the iTunes Store (do not close your browser without clicking this link). <span class='nobr'>If you experience<\/span> difficulty with this step, please try following the above steps again using <span class='nobr'>a different<\/span> web browser.<\/li>\n\n<li> Once you are back in the iTunes Store, enter your name, address and phone number into the form, then click Done. <\/li>\n\n<li> Select your County, then click Done.
