My lingering cold finally unlingered enough today that I could<\/span> venture\nout for a bit<\/span>: Anthony for a bike<\/span> ride, and me to give my new Nikon D700 a\nspin.<\/span> Other than the 20-minute night-time outing that resulted in the Impossible Photography<\/a>\npost and its followup<\/a>,\nI hadn't<\/span> been outside with the D700 since the day I got<\/span> it (the day I returned<\/span> to\nKyoto<\/a> from summer travels).<\/p>\n\n

I grabbed my biggest zoom (Nikkor 70<\/span>-200 f\/2.8 VR<\/a> and\na 1.7× Extender), and put the camera into “Auto ISO” mode such that\nit'll kick up the sensitivity as needed to keep a fast<\/span> shutter speed. I set the<\/span> top ISO to 6400; if that's not enough, it'll then lower the shutter\nspeed as needed for the shot.<\/p>\n\n

We went out about 45 minutes before sunset, and we were mostly in the\nshade of the setting sun, so we quickly got into high-ISO\nsituations....<\/p>\n\n\n

Anthony rode around the same little path on which he first rode a bike<\/span><\/a>\nalmost half his life ago. The park area<\/span> that the path is in looks pretty\nragged today, but it has its moments of beauty (autumn<\/a> · spring<\/a> · winter<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

While he rode, I sat and<\/span> relaxed, got bitten my mosquitos, and took pictures of whatever wandered in view...<\/p>\n\n

On the way back, Anthony stopped at a playground<\/span> to play, and I\naimlessly<\/span> snapped shots, including one of a bolt<\/span> sticking out of a rusty<\/span>\npole that is wholly unremarkable except the low-light circumstances under\nwhich it was taken...<\/p>\n\n

The shot above is a case where the dynamic range of the camera just\nwasn't enough to capture both the detail in the clouds and the detail in the\nriver\/trees (which weren't really as dark yet as they appear here, because\nI opted<\/span> to expose for the sky). It's a pretty<\/span> area; click on the “nearby\nphotos” link under the shot for lots of pretty pictures taken here.<\/p>\n\n

Not far away, under the brightness of an “artificial sun” light,\nconstruction crews continued working on burying the power lines, a project<\/span>\nthat has been going on in one form or another since early 2006<\/a>. I\nwouldn't<\/span> mind that it takes so long if they'd actually get rid of the\npower lines<\/i>. So far, it's all been preparation, apparently.<\/p>\n\n

Finally, just before arriving home, I snapped<\/span> a shot<\/span> of this warm cafe window...<\/p>\n\n

I really like the first and third shots (of Anthony, so I might<\/span> be a bit<\/span>\nbiased), but otherwise, there's not really anything exciting here except\nfor the low-light circumstances under which they were taken. In the same<\/span>\nway in which people were once excited by a car<\/span> that could go a whopping<\/span>\n20mph, I'm sure that<\/span> the excitement over these kind of results in these\nkind of situations will wane quickly in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n
