{"id":937,"date":"2008-09-17T20:49:07","date_gmt":"2008-09-17T11:49:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-09-17\/937"},"modified":"2008-09-17T20:49:07","modified_gmt":"2008-09-17T11:49:07","slug":"flash-sync-speed-and-other-mysteries-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-09-17\/937","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Flash Sync Speed&#8221; and Other Mysteries Explained"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>My &#8220;<a href=\"\/blog\/2008-09-04\/925\">Nikon D3 Shutter\nRelease in Super Slow Motion<\/a>&#8221; post from two weeks ago, in which <span class='nobr'>I\noffered<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a nice<\/span> presentation of the ingenious work by <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/actionphotosbymarianne.com\/\">Marianne Oelund<\/a>, garnered\nquite <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of attention, quickly becoming the most popular post on my blog\n(which perhaps doesn't say much, but in any case, it's still &ndash; two\nweeks later &ndash; getting many thousands of views <span class='nobr'>a day<\/span>).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A lot of people have commented that they had no idea that <span class='nobr'>a camera<\/span>\nshutter was so complex, and for the most part, that's okay because, for the\nmost part, photographers really don't need to be concerned with how the\nshutter works.<\/p>\n\n<p>For the most part.<\/p>\n\n<p>There are two situations in which knowledge of how <span class='nobr'>a shutter<\/span> works can\nreally benefit <span class='nobr'>a photographer<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n  <li>when the subject being photographed is moving <i>very<\/i> quickly (e.g. the prop of <span class='nobr'>a plane<\/span>)<\/li>\n  <li>when using <span class='nobr'>a flash<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>If you are a photographer who might ever face either situation, you owe\nit to yourself to read <b>Derek Miller<\/b>'s most excellent:<\/p>\n\n<div style='text-align:center; margin: 0 auto; width:75%; border: solid #733 1px; padding: 10px 0; background-color: #055; font-style:italic; font-weight:bold'><a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.penmachine.com\/2008\/09\/camera-works-shutters-flashes-and-sync\" style='font-size:110%' class='quiet'>Camera\nWorks: shutters, flashes, and sync speed<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>It's a <b>really excellent<\/b> writeup about how the shutter design and\noperation is deeply related to how flash photography can be done.
