Tired from the trip... overwhelmed <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/lightroom-goodies\/\">with work<\/a> (that <span class='nobr'>I\ndon't<\/span> even get paid for)... and spending an inordinate time at the doctor\nfor some <a href=\"\/blog\/2008-02-05\/715\">acute back\nproblems<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>It's been a<\/span> long week.<\/p>\n\n<p>But I was feeling okay last night, so after Mass in downtown Kyoto, <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> I'd give my new <b>Nikon D700<\/b>'s legendary low-light\nperformance <span class='nobr'>a spin,<\/span> combining it with the fastest lens that <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span> get my\nhands on (that is, one that lets in the most light), the same <b><a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nikonusa.com\/Find-Your-Nikon\/ProductDetail.page?pid=1435\"\nclass='quiet'>Nikkor 50mm <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/1.2<\/a><\/b> that <span class='nobr'>I borrowed<\/span> from <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.kotodama.net\/blog\/\">Zak<\/a> for my <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2008-02-05\/715\">Artsy-Fartsy in Kyoto<\/a> post\nearlier in the year.<\/p>\n\n<p>There isn't a color camera with better low-light performance, and if\nthere's <span class='nobr'>a commonly<\/span>-available lens with better low-light performance, <span class='nobr'>I\ndon't<\/span> know of it. So, the combination should let me get all kinds of rich,\nfull-color glossies, without <span class='nobr'>a tripod,<\/span> in absolute total darkness.<\/p>\n\n<p>Or something like that.<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic wide'><a name='JF7_000203' href=\"\/i\/JF7_000203.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_000203_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"459\"\nalt=\", ISO 2500 &amp;mdash; map &amp; image data &amp;mdash; nearby photos Quality Time sparsely-lit restaurant balcony overlooking the Kamo River Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2008 Jeffrey Eric Francis Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i000203\"\ntitle=\", ISO 2500 &amp;mdash; map &amp; image data &amp;mdash; nearby photos Quality Time sparsely-lit restaurant balcony overlooking the Kamo River Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2008 Jeffrey Eric Francis Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D700 + Nikkor 50mm f\/1.2 &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>100 sec, <span style='color:white'><span class='f'>f<\/span>\/1.2<\/span>, <span style='color:white'>ISO 2500<\/span> &mdash;\n<a href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJF7_000203.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_000203.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Quality Time<\/span>\n<br\/>sparsely-lit restaurant balcony overlooking the Kamo River\n<br\/>Kyoto, Japan\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Besides having no plan beyond shoving the camera and lens into my bag\nbefore heading out, <span class='nobr'>I faced<\/span> two major hurdles...<\/p>\n\n<p>The first is that I haven't yet opened the D700's manual, so <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span>\nknow much about it beyond what <span class='nobr'>I brought<\/span> over from having used the D200 for\n<span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> years. <span class='nobr'>It's not really<\/span> fair to put equipment to <span class='nobr'>a test<\/span> like this when\nit's likely that any failure will be what, in polite conversation, is\nreferred to as &#8220;user error&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\">\n  #post935 li { margin-bottom: 7px }\n<\/style>\n\n<p style='margin-bottom:0'>The second problem is that there are <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of things conspiring against\ngetting accurate focus:<\/p>\n\n<ol style='margin-top: 7px'>\n\n  <li>At <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/1.2, the depth-of-field is very thin, so focus must be <i>perfect<\/i>\n      to have any chance.<\/li>\n\n  <li>It's hard to focus in the dark, especially when it's so dark that <span class='nobr'>I can't<\/span> clearly see what <span class='nobr'>I think<\/span> I'm aiming at.<\/li>\n\n\n  <li>The Nikkor 50mm <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/1.2 is <span class='nobr'>a manual<\/span>-focus-only lens. Autofocus won't work with it.<\/li>\n\n  <li>The stock focus screen on the D700 is designed for autofocus; it's <i>horrible<\/i> to use with manual focus. <span class='nobr'>The first<\/span> time <span class='nobr'>I put<\/span> the D700 to my eye, <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> the lens <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> on it was broken because <span class='nobr'>I couldn't<\/span> get it to focus,\n       even by hand. <span class='nobr'>It took a<\/span> few moments to realize that I'd been so used to the sharp &#8220;focus snap&#8221;\n       of the <a href=\"\/blog\/2007-08-22\/550\">Katz Eye Focusing Screen<\/a> I'd put in my D200, that I'd\n       forgot how extraordinary it really is. (Sadly, Katz Eye doesn't yet\n       make <span class='nobr'>a focusing<\/span> screen for the D700.)<\/li>\n\n  <li>From what I've heard, the &#8220;live view&#8221; mode on the D700 would allow me\n       to easily get perfect focus, but like <span class='nobr'>I said,<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I haven't<\/span>\n       yet cracked the manual, so <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> know how to use it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Anyway, never to be daunted by the harshness of certain failure, <span class='nobr'>I set out<\/span> for <span class='nobr'>a 20<\/span>-minute walk around the Kyoto-nightlife area of Kiyamachi \/\nPontocho, with the lens fixed at <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/1.2, and\nthe camera set to automatically bump up the ISO sensitivity as high as it\nneeded to in order to maintain at least a 1\/<sub>100<\/sub>-second exposure.<\/p>\n\n<p>Of course, night photography is relatively easy if you have <span class='nobr'>a tripod<\/span> and\nthe thing you're photographing isn't moving, so I've posted plenty of\ntripod-assisted night shots taken over the years with my D200, including\n\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2008-03-21\/771\">cherry blossoms at dusk<\/a>,&nbsp;\na <a href=\"\/blog\/2008-03-21\/771\">lantern festival<\/a>,&nbsp;\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2007-04-04\/413\">cherry blossoms over <span class='nobr'>a river<\/span><\/a>,&nbsp;\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2008-06-28\/850\">Kyoto nightscape<\/a>,&nbsp;\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2006-04-18\/180\">small stream and cherry blossoms<\/a>,&nbsp;\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2007-10-06\/596\">Itsukushima shrine<\/a>,&nbsp; and\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2007-04-05\/414\">cherry blossoms in Gion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>No tripod on today's trip, though.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>All the images posted here are straight out of the camera (well,\nstraight out of Lightroom) without any extra post-processing, except for\nresizing for my blog. Indeed, the result is boring unless you realize that in\nreality, the scene was almost pitch black. It was &#8220;out of the way&#8221; to several\norders of magnitude, and in more meanings than one.<\/p>\n\n<p>Much of the lighting came from the establishment's sign at the end of\nthe alley, which is nothing more than <span class='nobr'>a washed<\/span>-out square of white in this\nphoto because in exposing for the dinginess of the alley, the light from\nsign itself totally washed out the image sensor.
