45 minutes before our arrival at Kansai International on our 13+ hour fight to Japan<\/a>, my GPS unit<\/a>\ntold me that we were passing by Mt. Fuji. It was supposed<\/span> to be 30 miles\naway, straight out the window on the right-hand side of the plane (port?\nstarboard? I dunno, I speak<\/span> English and use “right” and “left”. I also use<\/span>\n“get off the plane” rather than “deplane”).<\/p>\n\n

We were flying at seven and a half miles up (about 40,000 ft), and so if\nthe weather had cooperated, the view of a 30-mile-away Mt. Fuji would have\nbeen a glorious. It's under<\/span> the clouds somewhere in the picture above, but\nall I saw was a Cathay Pacific flight that we were overtaking at a rapid\npace.<\/p>\n\n\n

Just based on the time, location, and direction, I'm guessing<\/span> that it's\nCathay Pacific flight 521 (Tokyo to Hong Kong), which, according to the\nCathay Pacific schedule, uses an Airbus\nA330<\/a>. UPDATE: but it's not an A330, as Shyam points\nout<\/a>, it's a four-engine Airbus\nA340<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I would have rather seen Mt. Fuji, but it was sort of neat to see\nanother plane like that. I've made the trans-Pacific flight 70+ times, and\nit's remarkably rare to see another plane like this.<\/p>\n\n
