My trip to\nOhio<\/a> for the summer has finally ended, and so it's time for the annual\n“Back in Kyoto” post (just like 2007<\/a>, 2006<\/a>, and 2005<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

This year we took Northwest Airlines, which afforded us a mid<\/span>-day\ndeparture from Akron-Canton airport for a short<\/span> hop to Detroit, and then a\nDetroit<\/span>-Kansai flight that cuts out the west coast. That makes for an\noverall savings of several hours compared the Cleveland\/Chicago\/San\nFrancisco\/Kansai flight I've done many times on United Airlines. The shorter<\/span> trip is wonderful, but one unfortunate side effect is that the\nlongest leg is now 14 hours instead of 12 hours, which is, well,\nlong<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n

We actually arrived half an hour early, and to a wonderful<\/span> sunset. To top it<\/span> off, there was absolutely no waiting for immigration, luggage, or\ncustoms. Shockingly, my two bags were the fourth and fifth bags to emerge\non the little conveyer, which started just as we walked up. How\nwonderful.<\/p>\n\n

Like last year, Fumie and her mom met us and gave me a key<\/span> to a room<\/span> at\nthe on-airport hotel. They took Anthony for the two-hour drive home, which\nallowed me to shower and sleep right away.<\/p>\n\n

Except this year, I didn't sleep right away.<\/p>\n\n

While I was in Ohio, Fumie had picked up the Nikon D700<\/a> and new lenses\nI'd ordered, and had left them in the hotel room for me. Even after a\nshower,<\/span> I felt like<\/span> a zombie,<\/span> but I unboxed<\/span> the camera and the new Nikkor\n24<\/span>-70 f<\/span>\/2.8, threw in one of my Nikon D200<\/a> batteries,\nand walked around the airport for 15 minutes.<\/p>\n\n

The terminal building at Kansai\nInternational<\/a> is a curvy,<\/span> graceful, cavernous four levels high.<\/p>\n\n

The main building is like that for its 400-meter length, and so it's\nfull of photographic opportunities. In my zombie<\/span> state, though, the best I\ncould<\/span> come up with was this...<\/p>\n\n

I guess I like the escalators. They were also a photographic<\/span> target when\nI first<\/span> got my D200 (as seen in a post<\/span> about my photo\/blog\nworkflow<\/a> earlier this year).<\/p>\n\n

I felt pathetic not being able to exploit the visual richness of the\narea, so I packed<\/span> away the camera, exchanged some Canadian Dollars left\nover from our trip to\nVancouver<\/a> and Whistler<\/a>, and went back to\nthe room to sleep.<\/p>\n\n

I woke up refreshed at 6am, ate a couple<\/span> of bananas, packed up\neverything, and took the JR Haruka Express\ntrain<\/a> to Kyoto. It was mostly<\/span> empty, so I could<\/span> spread out and relax,\nand I caught<\/span> up on some photo work with Lightroom.<\/p>\n\n

It was a hot, muggy, humid, hazy summer day, typical of summer in this part of Japan.<\/p>\n\n

Japan has a lot of power lines (and the associated ugly towers) all over\nthe place, but there's one area between Kyoto and Osaka where they seem to\nbe unusually prevalent. I see it<\/span> from the train each time I go<\/span> by, but I\nkeep<\/span> meaning to head down there on my scooter to see what it looks like.\nWill have to do that some day.<\/p>\n\n

I got back home in Kyoto at about 10:30 this morning. The jetlag<\/span> hasn't\nbeen too bad, but it's now 7pm and I'm starting to feel like a zombie<\/span>\nagain.
