band, below the big &#8220;@&#8221;, is when the camera's flash fired for the exposure.)<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/actionphotosbymarianne.com\/\">Marianne Oelund<\/a>\nrecently <a href=\"http:\/\/forums.dpreview.com\/forums\/read.asp?forum=1021&amp;message=29166153\">posted <span class='nobr'>a sequence<\/span> of\nimages of <span class='nobr'>a Nikon<\/span> D3 shutter<\/a> in action, over on the <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/forums.dpreview.com\/forums\/forum.asp?forum=1021\"\nclass='quiet'>Digital Photography Review Nikon D3 forum<\/a>. With her\npermission, <span class='nobr'>I have turned<\/span> that sequence into <span class='nobr'>a mini<\/span> web movie application,\nsuch that you can animate the frames by sliding your mouse back and forth\nacross the image.<\/p>\n\n<p>I thought she had created the images with <span class='nobr'>a high<\/span>-speed camera, but it\nturns out that, lacking <span class='nobr'>a high<\/span>-speed camera, she went to great (and\ningenious) lengths to create this sequence. <span class='nobr'>In her own<\/span> words:<\/p>\n\n<div style='margin-top:60px; margin-left:3em; margin-right:5em; position:relative; color: #BB6'>\n\n<span style='position:absolute; left:-0.5em; font-family:roman; top:-15px; font-size:300%'>&#8220;<\/span>\n\n<p>The setup used to create the images was rather simple; anyone with basic\nmacro equipment could do the same. <span class='nobr'>It just requires<\/span> quite <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> of\npatience! <span class='nobr'>I took a<\/span> total of about 200 frames, and selected 70 for the\nslides.<\/p>\n\n<p>The imaging camera was another D3 (but any camera could be used), with <span class='nobr'>a\nMicro<\/span> 60mm lens, <span class='nobr'>a white<\/span> reflective collar around the lens, and <span class='nobr'>a\ndownward<\/span>-firing SB-900 mounted above. Cable releases were used on both\ncameras, to avoid disturbing their positions.<\/p>\n\n<p>What wasn't quite as straightforward, was collecting the timing data.\nThis is the area where <span class='nobr'>a little<\/span> engineering knowledge and equipment comes\nin. The &#8220;subject&#8221; D3 camera had an SB-800 mounted, set to manual 1\/128th\npower, and turned toward the rear. <span class='nobr'>A phototransistor<\/span> detected this flash\npulse, which was captured on an oscilloscope. That works out to an average speed of about\n8.7 meters\/second, or just over 19mph. That's <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of speed to accelerate\nto and from so quickly. Wow.
