We took the Whistler\nMountaineer<\/a> this morning from Vancouver to Whistler. The trip takes<\/span>\nsomething like two hours by car, but three and a half<\/span> by train. I thought<\/span> it was odd that the train took longer, until I realized<\/span> that they go slow\n(sometimes stopping) so that you can enjoy the often-spectacular\nscenery. More on the wonderful train ride another day.<\/p>\n\n

Arriving in Whistler, our “room” at the Four Seasons Whistler was a bit<\/span>\nmore than we bargained for, having gotten bumped up to a multi<\/span>-room,\naptly-named “Deluxe Executive Suite”.<\/p>\n\n

The room is amazing<\/i>. At 800 sq<\/span>. ft., it's almost as big as the\ntwo-bedroom apartment I rented<\/span> in California before I got<\/span> married. It is certainly<\/span> the nicest hotel room I will<\/span> ever step foot in.<\/p>\n\n

Two bathrooms, two showers, one bath, two bedrooms (the living room\nconverting with a hide<\/span>-a-bed), wonderful mountain views from all windows,\ntons of storage, and exquisite and impeccable styling and detail everywhere.\nThere's nothing the least bit wrong with this room. It's amazing. It's such a<\/span> contrast to the utter dump that is the Sheraton Suites Hotel in\nCuyahoga Falls, Ohio<\/a> that we had the unfortunate experience to stay at\ntwo years ago.<\/p>\n\n

I do feel a bit iffy about how we ended up with this room. As I'd\nmentioned, we'd come on the Whistler Mountaineer train, which arrives at\nnoon every day. Every customer that arrives by train arrives to the hotel\nat about 12:30. There's just one train, at the same time. Every day. It\ndidn't even cross my mind that hotels doing business in this little resort\ntown wouldn't accommodate that very specific schedule, so I was<\/span> shocked\nwhen the train's shuttle dropped us off at 12:30 to check in, and we were\ntold that our room wouldn't be ready until the 3:00 check-in time.<\/p>\n\n

Now, I should<\/span> state here that it's my own fault for not paying attention\nto the check-in time, but really, it's a remarkably<\/span> stupid business\ndecision. The train<\/span> arrives at the same time every day.<\/p>\n\n

So, we had two and a half hours to kill, so we wandered to the\nrestaurant to eat. While waiting for the food, I stole<\/span> away to have a chat<\/span>\nwith a manager,<\/span> to ask whether they knew about the really famous train that\narrives at noon every day. Wouldn't it be smarter for business to\naccommodate that schedule? A 3pm check<\/span>-in time says “don't stay here if you\ntake the train.”<\/p>\n\n

He suggested that if we'd asked for an early check-in, they would have\ntried to accommodate it, and indeed, it's my own fault for not even thinking\nabout it. Still, the concierge at the Four Seasons in Vancouver<\/a>\nhelped us with our arrangements to arrive up here, and didn't warn us that\nthe schedule would result in two and a half<\/span> hours of dead time.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, I learned<\/span> my lesson to be sure to check the check-in time, even\nwhen it seems like it should obviously be okay.<\/p>\n\n

In looking to see when our room would be ready, he noticed that our\nreservation was for a room<\/span> with two small twin beds, which is all Fumie\ncould get when she booked it. He suggested<\/span> that we'd be more comfortable in\na room<\/span> with a king,<\/span> and I immediately<\/span> interjected that I didn't<\/span> come to\ntalk to him because I was<\/span> trying to get something. I came because<\/span> a\nbusiness<\/span> had made a poor<\/span> decision that I was<\/span> affected by, and I wanted<\/span> them\nto know. I was pleasant<\/span>, but informative; if no one tells them, how would\nthey know?<\/p>\n\n

He said that the thought of moving to a bigger<\/span> room was unrelated\n– he wanted his customers to be comfortable – so he'd look into\nit while we ate. I don't<\/span> believe for a moment<\/span> that it's unrelated, so half\nof me wants to pay for it to preserve some kind of standard of conduct for\nmyself, but there's no way I could<\/span> afford this amazing suite of rooms.<\/p>\n\n
