Today's, for\nexample, is on the <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bigpicture\/2008\/08\/2008_olympics_opening_ceremony.html\">opening\nceremony of the Beijing Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The images are <b>absolutely stunning<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The images, taken from the news wires and such, are selected\/compiled by\nAlan Taylor (who <span class='nobr'>I assume<\/span> is on staff at the Boston Globe), and are always of\nthe absolute highest caliber. Jaw-dropping. Awesome, in the true &#8220;inspires awe&#8221; sense.<\/p>\n\n<p>The quality of the images that Alan selects are so utterly compelling,\nyou find yourself enjoying subjects that you normally have no interest in.\nFor example, <span class='nobr'>I'm not really<\/span> into bike racing, but his compilation on the <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bigpicture\/2008\/07\/2008_tour_de_france_conclusion.html\">Tour\nde France<\/a> had me saying &#8220;wow&#8221; over and over again.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you are a photographer, you will be <i>humbled<\/i> by the photos in\n<i>The Big Picture<\/i>. <span class='nobr'>I'd like to<\/span> think that I've taken <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> nice photos\nin my time (for example, some of those on my <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/photostream\/japan.html#random\">Japan\nphotostream<\/a>), but really, the photos selected for <i>The Big\nPicture<\/i> are so far beyond what <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span> ever do, <span class='nobr'>I can't<\/span> feel anything\nbut truly humbled.<\/p>\n\n<p>Speaking of the Olympics, if you'd like to see <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> about what goes\ninto making some of these photos, here's an article from <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.laforetvisuals.com\/blog\">Vincent\nLaforet<\/a>, shooting the Olympics for Newsweek, on\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.newsweek.com\/blogs\/olympicpix\/archive\/2008\/08\/06\/preparing-for-the-biggest-organized-event-of-them-all-the-olympics.aspx\">his\npreparations for the Olympics<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>It's an impressive<\/span> amount of equipment and preparation.<\/p>\n\n<p>And just as I'm about to post this, <span class='nobr'>I see that<\/span> Vincent has written\nanother post about <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.blog.newsweek.com\/blogs\/olympicpix\/archive\/2008\/08\/08\/fireworks-show-fizzles-at-the-great-wall.aspx\">his\nfirst attempt at an Olympic photo<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>It also shows<\/span> how much work can go\ninto this. <span class='nobr'>He spent<\/span> 12+ hours preparing for one photo, and didn't get it. <span class='nobr'>Had he gotten<\/span> it, it might have shown up in Newsweek, and you might have\nspent two seconds admiring it as you flipped through.<\/p>\n\n<p>12 hours.
