In the photo above, non-photographers will see a slightly<\/span> soft picture\nof a little<\/span> boy holding a stuffed<\/span> Curious George, having something shown to\nhim by his grandma.<\/p>\n\n

Photographers will see the metadata under it and say “Holy\nFreakin' Cow !  200mm handheld at 1<\/sup>\/<\/big>13 sec\n!<\/b>” At least, that's what I thought.<\/span> That was the first picture I\ntook<\/span> when I saw<\/span> them coloring drawings of birds together (at the time, my\nmom was explaining something about woodpeckers), and after hearing the\nagonizingly slow slap of the shutter, I pushed<\/span> the ISO from 500 to 1250. I never<\/span> would have imagined that first shot would have come out as nicely as\nit did.<\/p>\n\n

VR<\/a> is just amazing.<\/p>\n\n

Not thinking I was going to get anything good with the slow shutter\nspeeds, I grabbed<\/span> my SB-800 speedlight and set it near Anthony, aiming\nstraight up to the ceiling. I controlled<\/span> it from my D200 via Nikon's i-TTL<\/a>, and\nalso added the on-camera flash for fill....<\/p>\n\n

I spent all of 20 seconds thinking about (and setting up) the flash, and\nthe results reflect that. They light has a harsh,<\/span> flat feeling, and the\nimages just don't have the depth as the slightly-soft ambient light shots\nshown above.<\/p>\n\n

Suboptimal lighting aside, the pictures do capture a sweet<\/span> moment in a young<\/span> boy's life.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
