My friend Ray<\/a> invited me\nout to see Michael Stanley<\/a> in\nhis latest project, a band<\/span> called Midlife Chryslers<\/a>. Back in the\n80s, The Michael Stanley Band<\/i> was huge in the Midwest, and I was<\/span> a\nbig<\/span> fan. (The first concert I ever<\/span> went to was a Michael<\/span> Stanley Band\nconcert.) Back in the day, they were able to crack the national Top 40 once\nor twice, but were never able to do much more nationally. In the Midwest<\/span>,\nthough, it's not possible to overstate their popularity.<\/p>\n\n

Tonight's gig at The\nNorthside<\/a> (Akron, Ohio) with the Midlife Chryslers<\/b> was a bit<\/span>\ndifferent, playing bluesy rock. Photography was allowed, so I put<\/span> my Nikkor\n85mm f\/1.4 on my Nikon D200 and give concert photography a whirl.<\/span> The D200 is<\/span> not known for its low-light performance (nor am I, for that matter), but\nI got<\/span> a few shots<\/a>\nthat looked okay.<\/p>\n\n

It was challenging. Here's one that came out okay, despite the long\n1\/20th second exposure at 85mm (with no VR, mind you)...<\/p>\n\n

I like how the wall painting in the background fits into this shot, but\ncomposition-wise, I was really<\/span> limited. The limiting<\/span> factor was mostly my\nnot wanting to block anyone's view, so I didn't<\/span> spend much time with the\ncamera, and was somewhat hesitant when I did.<\/span> Mostly, I stayed<\/span> in one spot\nthat seemed to be okay, so my ability to compose was really restricted.<\/p>\n\n

The lighting and my position conspired to make for really bad shots of\nMichael Stanley. None of them came out. Here's the least sucky of the\nbatch:<\/p>\n\n

The angle\/lighting was much better for the sax player, who also\npresented himself much more photogenicly to begin with. The camera<\/span> loved\nhim, and he loved the camera back...<\/p>\n\n

Most of the shots were fuzzy due to camera shake, or lack of focus. I tried<\/span> to salvage one such shot by applying some funky processing, in the\nsame ballpark as the negative clarity “Dave Hill”\nlook<\/a> I did<\/span> in my previous post, albeit with maximum positive clarity to\nkeep a gritty<\/span> edge...<\/p>\n\n

I'm not sure the result was worth the effort, but there it is.<\/p>\n\n

A real treat was for me to met Michael Gismondi, the base player of\nThe Michael Stanley Band<\/i> who was apparently just guesting with this\nevening's performance of Midlife Chryslers. Long ago, I used to<\/span> work with\nhis sister, Jeannette, who ran the electron microscopy lab at NEOUCOM<\/a>, and\nlonger before that, his brother-in-law was my high-school chemistry and\nphysics teacher...<\/p>\n\n
