Today we visited a most excellent playground in Ravenna, a town<\/span> four\nmiles north, and among the resulting photos was one of Anthony gleefully\nenjoying a spin<\/span> on a suspended<\/span> tire. I liked<\/span> the picture, but thought that\na more<\/span> punchy treatment would suit it better. I've occasionally liked the\nresults of a “Dave Hill look” treatment (described here<\/a>, and another\nexample here<\/a>), and what\nyou see above is the result.<\/p>\n\n

This time, though, I took advantage<\/span> of a new<\/span> feature of Lightroom 2<\/span><\/a> to soften it up, and take off the edge that the normal Dave Hill result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can see in the develop settings at right that most settings are\ntotally exaggerated... recovery, fill light, blacks, and contrast. The key here<\/span> is clarity<\/b>, and how it was applied. Clarity was first\nintroduced in Lightroom version 1.1<\/a> to allow you to enhance local\ncontrast, and with the normal “Dave Hill look” treatment, you push it to its maximum.<\/p>\n\n

Lightroom 2,<\/span> however, introduces the ability to apply negative\nclarity<\/b>, which reduces local contrast. This softens things up, with the\nmarquee use being to smooth the look of skin in a portrait<\/span> (and as such,\nnegative clarity is normally used with a localized<\/span>-correction brush, so\nthat you don't reduce the contrast of areas like the eyes).<\/p>\n\n

In this case, I used negative<\/span> clarity on the entire frame, which softens\nup the whole thing, bringing the somewhat harsh “Dave Hill look” more in\nline with the youthful, innocent subject of the shot. I really<\/span> like the\neffect.<\/p>\n\n

Here's the “normal” treatment I would<\/span> have given the\noriginal photo, which has some fill light<\/b> applied to make up for the\nharsh shadows...<\/p>\n\n
