{"id":879,"date":"2008-07-23T22:50:07","date_gmt":"2008-07-23T13:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-07-23\/879"},"modified":"2008-07-23T22:50:07","modified_gmt":"2008-07-23T13:50:07","slug":"making-a-difference-one-day-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2008-07-23\/879","title":{"rendered":"Making a Difference, One Day at a Time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>As I wrote in my story about <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2008-07-03\/856\">my visit to <span class='nobr'>a Japanese<\/span> High\nSchool<\/a>, part of the visit was <span class='nobr'>a group<\/span> discussion with students about <span class='nobr'>a\nwide<\/span> variety of issues, including what they want to become later in life. <span class='nobr'>The girls<\/span> that hoped to raise <span class='nobr'>a family<\/span> said so somewhat sheepishly, as if\nbeing <span class='nobr'>a mother<\/span> wasn't &#8220;real&#8221; work.<\/p>\n\n<p>I corrected them, pointing out that motherhood is an unsung,\nunappreciated, demanding job that society gives little credit for, but\nshould. After Anthony was born, <span class='nobr'>I called<\/span> my mom and said &#8220;thanks, and\nsorry&#8221;, because you really don't <i>get it<\/i> until you have kids of your\nown.<\/p>\n\n<p>Nevertheless, <span class='nobr'>I encouraged<\/span> all of them to try to understand how much\nwork their parents do for them, and perhaps actually express thanks for\nthat sometime.<\/p>\n\n<p>Fast-forward to this week. Ninomiya-sensei (my host for the visit)\npassed along papers that the students wrote about their impressions from\nour discussions.
