It's been a busy few days, photographically speaking. The other<\/span> day\nAnthony went swimming in the river with Greg<\/a>. This evening\nI had<\/span> one photo-op event with noh musician\nRiko-chan's daddy<\/a>, and another with Yoko-chan, whose daddy<\/a> arranged for my\nrecent visit to a Japanese<\/span>\nhigh school<\/a>. On the way<\/span> home, I spotted<\/span> the most amazing (not in a good<\/span>\nway) car in the parking lot of a convenience<\/span> store, and had to whip out the\ncamera then as well. Much photo-processing awaits.<\/p>\n\n

This post is about Yoko-chan, one of Anthony's kindergarten friends. She performed<\/span> today at the Kyoto\nBrighton Hotel's<\/a> “Relay Music Festival in Atrium”, which is a series<\/span> of\nfree musical performances every evening in July. They've apparently been\ndoing it a while,<\/span> because tonight's was performance #519 (for the series, not for Yoko-chan :-)).<\/p>\n\n

The hotel has a large atrium, at one end of which is the stage....<\/p>\n\n

There is, to a first approximation, no light inside. I was expecting<\/span> the\nworst, but wow, it just goes to show what a monopod<\/span><\/a> and a little<\/span> VR<\/a> can do. This next shot was taken with my Nikkor 70<\/span>-200 f<\/span>\/2.8 zoom<\/a> at full 200mm zoom, with a glacially<\/span> long\n1\/20th second shutter...<\/p>\n\n

There was a mix of women and girls, singing old children's folk songs.\nYoko-chan's daddy told me that most people wouldn't even know them today,\nbut most people's grandparents would. I actually<\/span> knew one song because I\nheard<\/span> it over and over and over in a Bank<\/span> of Kyoto radio commercial that\nplayed about every five minutes throughout the afternoons while I was<\/span>\nworking on the first edition of my book<\/a> in\n1994-1996.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, they came out and sang very nicely...<\/p>\n\n

Yoko-chan's daddy is also a camera<\/span> geek<\/a>, and\nwas getting shots as well. I like to<\/span> get the shot of people getting the\nshot, so where we are....<\/p>\n\n

I don't know about you, but I'm just a sucker<\/span> for little kids in traditional Japanese dress. Cute. cute. cute.<\/p>\n\n

It was over all too quickly, and Yoko-chan came out to be greeted by a\nbunch<\/span> of her classmates...<\/p>\n\n

There was even less light after the show, because now there were no\nspotlights. I switched<\/span> my super-fast Sigma 30mm f<\/span>\/1.4 lens<\/a> for the lobby shots. Here's Yoko-chan's\ndaddy and other parents waiting for the kids...<\/p>\n\n

The lady in red is Mizuki-chan's mommy<\/a>. I see<\/span>\nMizuki-chan<\/a> at “Jumping” (preschool gymnastics<\/a>) and\njust know that she will be participating in the 2020 Olympics in some\nevent. I hope she<\/span>'ll let me take pictures.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
