Fumie and I made a day trip up to Tokyo yesterday for a birthday<\/span> party\nfor singer Kousuke\nAtari<\/a> (\u4e2d\u5b5d\u4ecb),<\/span> whom we've seen in concert many\ntimes<\/a>. It was attended<\/span> by 85 of his closest friends<\/strike> fans.<\/p>\n\n

We ran into a lady we met at his Roppongi Hills, Tokyo<\/a>\nconcert in January, whom Fumie had really clicked with, so after\nyesterday's event, we all stopped by a nearby<\/span> cafe so that they could\nchat.<\/p>\n\n

The cafe had a nice – although somewhat pretentious –\natmosphere. One of the<\/span> workers was a “non-Japanese looking” guy who greeted\nme in French, to which I made<\/span> the mistake of replying in French. I know exactly<\/span> one French phrase, and I can<\/span> deliver it with a convincing<\/span> Parisian\naccent: Je ne parle pas fran\u00e7ais<\/i> (“I don't<\/span> speak French”).\nApparently, he didn't believe that I didn't<\/span> speak French, because he\ncontinued to use French with me the whole time I was<\/span> there, resisting my\nefforts to communicate in Japanese. I ended<\/span> up having to use hand gestures. He seemed<\/span> to have no trouble understanding everyone else's Japanese, so\nperhaps it was just me.<\/p>\n\n

I'm proud of myself, at least, for not trying to use English with him.\nWhy, after all, should I expect<\/span> someone to speak English just because\nthey're white? Frankly, past experience indicates that there's a very<\/span> good\nchance that any white men you run into in Japan does<\/i> speak English,\nbut I try<\/span> not to prejudice.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, it turns out that the cafe was a branch<\/span><\/a> of the\nappropriately-named 400-year-old Paris restaurant La Tour D'Argent<\/a> (“Tower of\nMoney”).<\/p>\n\n
