Anthony was really stoked on Friday afternoon when we all went shopping,\nand he ended up with new shoes. These had shiny leather... gleaming\nwhites... cool blue... that all added up to shoes that he felt made him run\nfaster. He was tickled<\/span> pink.<\/p>\n\n

He was excited to show them to Gen when we went to his place<\/a> on\nSaturday, and to show them to Fumie's mom on Sunday, and, well, to anyone\nand everyone we met.<\/p>\n\n

So today, he comes back from kindergarten, and here's what was left near\nthe door...<\/p>\n\n

You couldn't help but laugh (unless you cried, which was a distinct<\/span>\noption), so I had<\/span> to take a picture.<\/span> The lighting<\/span> in our entry way<\/a> is pretty\nbad, photographically speaking (it's mixed incandescent and fluorescent),\nso I decided<\/span> to give flash a try.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I set my D200's flash to “commander mode”, and set up my SB800\nSpeedlight as a CLS<\/span> slave (“CLS” is Creative Lighting System<\/i> –\nNikon's automatic flash-power control), pointing the SB800 up into a flash<\/span>\numbrella directly over the shoes. I also set<\/span> my camera's flash to\ncontribute, with an exposure compensation of -0.7EV to soften it up a bit.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

The result was very soft, natural, “unnoticed” lighting, which is what I\nwanted.<\/span> Lighting setups don't come much easier than this, but with my lack\nof flash experience, any success is noteworthy.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
