With San Diego at 82 wins and Washington at 81 wins, <span class='nobr'>San Diego<\/span> did better by one game (and that's over <span class='nobr'>a 162<\/span>-game season). San Diego, with\ntheir 82 wins, won their division (National League, Central) and guaranteed\nthemselves <span class='nobr'>a spot<\/span> in the playoffs (where they <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mlb\/playoffs?round=1\">promptly lost<\/a>).\n\n<\/p>\n\n<p>\n\nWashington, however, with their almost-identical record, happens to be in <span class='nobr'>a\ndifferent<\/span> division (National League, East), and their 81 wins was good\nenough to get them..... dead last. <span class='nobr'>No playoff<\/span> spot. <span class='nobr'>Is this at<\/span> all fair?\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThe team I root for, the <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mlb\/teams\/cle\">Cleveland Indians<\/a>, with\ntheir 93 wins did better than 37% of the teams that did make the playoffs. <span class='nobr'>Is this at<\/span> all fair?\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIn Japanese baseball this year (with only 12 teams, in two divisions), the\nfour teams with the best records got into the playoffs. <span class='nobr'>The team I<\/span> root\nfor, the <a href=\"http:\/\/baseball.yahoo.co.jp\/npb\/teams\/5\/\">Hanshin\nTigers<\/a>, won their division for the first time since, <span class='nobr'>I think,<\/span> 1989, the\nyear <span class='nobr'>I first<\/span> came to Japan. They'll play the winner of the other division\nfor the &#8220;Japan Series&#8221; (which seems more appropriately named than the\nNorth-American &#8220;World&#8221; Series).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nAs much as it was Hanshin's year this year, it was the opposite for the <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/baseball.yahoo.co.jp\/npb\/teams\/376\/\">Rakuten Golden\nEagles<\/a>, which ended the year 25 games back.... from the 2nd-to-last\nplace team in their division. <span class='nobr'>All in all<\/span>, they ended <span class='nobr'>a stunning<\/span> 51.5 games\nback from the <a href=\"http:\/\/baseball.yahoo.co.jp\/npb\/teams\/12\/\">Softbank\nHawks<\/a> (and this is in <span class='nobr'>a season<\/span> with only 136 games).
