Woo-hoo, as the rumor mill has been buzzing about for the last two\nweeks, Nikon officially announced the “D700” professional SLR today, just\n10 months after announcing\nthe D3 and D300<\/a> followups to the D200<\/a> that I have.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Last year, I got to<\/span> play\nwith the D3 & D300<\/a> before they went on sale, and despite lusting\nafter “shiny & new” and the benefits over my D200, I decided<\/span> to not\nupgrade.<\/p>\n\n

This time might be different.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't believe the rumors first started, not least of which\nbecause the name – D700 – makes absolutely no sense in light of\nNikon's normal camera-naming scheme. But the press<\/span> releases went out today,\nand Digital Photography Review already has a D700 hands-on\npreview<\/a>, so it's real.<\/p>\n\n

The D3 is still Nikon's top of the line, but the D700 brings in some of\nthe conveniences from the prosumer bodies – features missing\nfrom the D3<\/a> that the D300 provided. About the only thing that the D700\nbrings from the D3 that I wish<\/span> it didn't is the tiny autofocus-selector\ncoverage. All three (D3, D300, D700) have a bazillion<\/span> auto-focus selector\npoints, but only in the D300 do they cover the whole screen. With the\nD3\/D700, they're clustered all in the center (in the “DX” portion of the\nsensor), which makes the bulk of them fairly useless.<\/p>\n\n

Still, the D700 is pretty much exactly the “full-frame D200-sized\ncamera” that I wished<\/span> for early on, and much earlier than I expected,<\/span> so\nI'm thrilled...<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
