We decided to have a relaxing day, and took drive north an hour and a\nhalf<\/span> to a middle<\/span>-of-nowhere cafe that Fumie had read about on someone\nelse's blog. It turns<\/span> out that it's run by a guy<\/span> who used to be some kinds\nof architectural-plastics engineer in Osaka, and left it all behind to\nfollow his passion for, oddly enough, stone kilns. That translated into a\ncafe<\/span> with fresh pizza on the menu.<\/p>\n\n

The place is called kamo no shirabe<\/i> (\u304b\u3082\u306e\u3057\u3089\u3079), which means either “melody\nof the ducks”, or “sounds of the river”, depending on whether the\nkamo<\/i> in the name is the word for “duck” or a reference<\/span> to the\nkamo<\/i> river (“Duck river”) that flows by the place. (There's also a\nkamo<\/i> river in Kyoto, so perhaps it's a common<\/span> name?).<\/p>\n\n

In either case, there was good food in a very<\/span> pleasant atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n

It's in a place called Takashima City in Shiga Prefecture (an hour and a\nhalf<\/span> north of Kyoto, Japan), but they must be on the far-flung outskirts\nbecause there's no City in evidence anywhere around here. We each got a $15 “pizza set”, a triplet<\/span> consisting of a personal<\/span> pizza,\na drink,<\/span> and a small<\/span> salad. It was most<\/i> excellent. <\/p>\n\n

After stuffing myself on my pizza and most of Anthony's, I went out<\/span> for\na short<\/span> stroll with the camera. Here's the restaurant from the rear, from across the little\nriver that flows by.<\/p>\n\n

And the view looking the other way – the one you see from the restaurant – is of terraced rice paddies,\nmountains, and on a drizzly<\/span> day like today, mist...<\/p>\n\n

I love the looks of terraces of rice paddies cut into the mountains, such\nas these<\/a> and these<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

It's then that I met the proprietor, who was happy to show me the wood-burning stone\nkiln that he made himself, in which our pizzas had been cooked...<\/p>\n\n

I like a cup of hot coffee to settle the tummy after a big<\/span> meal, so I\nordered<\/span> one, then watched him prepare it. He was chatting<\/span> with Fumie as he\ndid, which yielded the big smile in this post's lead photo, but eventually\nit was time to get down to business of fine coffee...<\/p>\n\n

The guy and his wife do a lot themselves. He made the<\/span> kilns, and the\nfurniture, for example. (Check out the heavy wooden tables in the 2nd photo,\nfor example.) They grow most of the vegetables they use in their cooking,\nright next to the restaurant.
