The parking lot I use near Anthony's kindergarten used to be part of a\ntemple<\/span> garden that, apparently, contained some bamboo. We've noticed of\nlate some bamboo shooting up through the asphalt, growing at an astonishing\nrate. (Well, at least, astonishing if you're not already familiar with how\nfast bamboo grows.)<\/p>\n\n

The parking lot owner (who also owns the temple) doesn't care for it, so\nhe hacked it off once when it popped up last year. You can see<\/span> its remains\nto the left of the growing shoot above. I've been watching this one for the\nlast couple of weeks, hoping that it doesn't get cut down.<\/p>\n\n

It grew about 15 feet in 16 days, which averages more than 11 inches a\nday.<\/span> That's far less than the maximum of 2 inches per hour claimed on\nWikipedia<\/a>, but impressive nevertheless.<\/p>\n\n

The one shoot above looks pathetic all by itself, especially with such\nan unphotogenic backdrop, but generally speaking, I love the<\/span> look of\nbamboo, both when it's growing (e.g. like this<\/a> or this<\/a>), and the many\nways its used after it's harvested, such as in fencing<\/a>, security<\/a>, flooring<\/a>, wall construction<\/a>,\nwall covering<\/a>, of\ncourse, in the arts (such as ikebana<\/a> and lanterns<\/a>), and, well, just about everything<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
