I spotted this snail on a small tiled “roof” on top of a short<\/span> wall\noutside Giouji Temple<\/a>\nin western Kyoto. He seemed<\/span> quite photogenic, as did the wall. Gioujo\ntemple has all kinds of\npretty walls<\/a> of various different constructions<\/a>,\nalthough this external wall (seen in the left of this picture<\/a>) is\nlikely the least interesting.<\/p>\n\n

Most of the old nails put in to secure the tiles were sticking out like\nthis one. Perhaps the wood underneath got wet, expanded, and squeezed the\nnail out? It seemed<\/span> quite odd to me.<\/p>\n\n

The temple itself is small and not very well known. I've heard that its\nfall foliage is excellent, but I remember<\/span> it for its moss<\/a> and its ferns<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Both moss and ferns tend to be below eye level, drawing one's gaze down,\nwhich is why I almost<\/span> smacked face first into this snail hovering right at\neye level....<\/p>\n\n

I'd love to know how that little guy got there. He's on a<\/span> small branch\nhanging over the path, attached to a huge,<\/span> long, sweeping branch that arcs\nway around, over, then down to the ground. The snail<\/span> in question is a fuzzy<\/span>\nblob on the leaves hanging over the path in the photo below, which doesn't\nshow very well just how long the branch really is.<\/p>\n\n

Meanwhile, back at the front, the little trouper from the first photos has traveled\nabout a foot<\/span> in the last hour, has made a U-turn, and is heading back up toward the top of the roof...<\/p>\n\n
