A neighborhood restaurant featured in an earlier blog post<\/a>\nsuffered a fire<\/span> yesterday when the cook took the wrong approach in cleaning\nthe vent ducting above the stove. (Note to other cooks: using fire to burn\naway accumulated grime in vertical ducting works very well only if you\nconsider the rest of the building to be “accumulated grime”.)<\/p>\n\n

The fire explains why helicopters were hovering directly over our place\nfor a while<\/span> yesterday. (Hovering helicopters are apparently not good news\nin Japan. The last time<\/span> helicopters were buzzing around, two weeks ago, it\nwas due to a keeper<\/span> at the nearby Kyoto Zoo having been mauled to\ndeath<\/a> by a tiger<\/span> when he apparently neglected to properly close a door<\/span>\nbefore cleaning a cage.<\/span> Yikes.)<\/p>\n\n

The fire was yesterday afternoon, but I didn't<\/span> hear about it until the\nevening when Fumie saw it on the news. So this morning<\/span>, I stopped<\/span> by after\ndropping Anthony off at school. Oddly, there were 20+ firemen milling\nabout, mostly, according to the red bands on their sleeves, fire\ninvestigators.<\/p>\n\n

Just as I was arriving, the two fire trucks that were there started to\nleave, and although I have<\/span> no experience with photojournalism, it doesn't\ntake much thought to know that a big<\/span> red fire truck can add interest to a\nphoto<\/span> of a fire<\/span>-damaged building, so I took<\/span> a shot<\/span> as it pulled\naway...<\/p>\n\n

(I took lots of fire-truck pictures on my very first outing with my Nikon D200<\/a>, two and a half<\/span> years ago.)<\/p>\n\n

One person suffered from smoke inhalation, but otherwise no one was\nhurt. I'm sure that<\/span> the fire department arrived on the scene quickly,\nconsidering that there's a fire<\/span> station less than 100 yards away!<\/p>\n\n

This area, where the Biwako Canal turns north, has proved photogenicly\nfruitful for my blog, although usually for more pleasant reasons than\ntoday.
