Yesterday's picture of a\nwater<\/span> lily<\/a> was taken during a dark,<\/span> rainy day at the City of\nKusatsu's (“Water Forest”) park. The name in<\/span> Japanese is mizu no\nmori<\/i> (\u6c34\u306e\u68ee<\/a>). They have\noutside gardens with all kinds of water plants, a large<\/span> greenhouse (“Lotus\nHall”), a movie<\/span> theater, and restaurant. It costs $3 for adults.<\/p>\n\n

It was raining while we where there, which is perhaps appropriate for a\n“water forest”.<\/p>\n\n

One thing I'll never understand is the apparent need in Japanese culture\nto make allowance for the fact that a smoker<\/span> might not want to go for more\nthan three minutes without a cigarette.<\/span> Smoking was not allowed in the\ngardens, except for pretty much every place there was a bench<\/span> (the little\ncovered area in the photo above being one of the many smoking areas). We were the<\/span> only ones there at the time – a rainy<\/span> day just before\nclosing time – so we were lucky, but one smoker would ruin the whole\ngardens for everyone else. Sigh.<\/p>\n\n

The rain picked up toward the end, so we took the opportunity to have some lotus ice cream (which was quite tasty)...<\/p>\n\n

Once you get close to the place, the place is easy to find because there's 300-foot tall wind turbine right at the end of the parking lot...<\/p>\n\n

It's 200 feet up to the center of the prop; the blades have a 230<\/span>-foot\ncircumference. It generates<\/span> electricity in winds from 3mph to 56mph\n(generating 1500kW in winds from 29mph on). It doesn't spin very fast...\nthe speed is limited to about three seconds per rotation, which is what it\nwas doing while we were there.<\/p>\n\n

Without limiters, it could, of course, spin much<\/i> faster, but that\nwould be bad. If winds<\/span> go over 56mph (25 m\/s), the whole thing shuts down\nso that it doesn't self destruct like this one\ndid<\/a> (slow motion\nview<\/a>) when its limiter broke.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
