I wrote the other day about some hiking in the hills of eastern\nKyoto<\/a>, finishing up that story noting that a trail<\/span> we took came out at\nthe back of a “sorta' famous spot”, which if you looked at any of the map\nlinks, you realized was the Kiyomizu Temple<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

This internationally-known cultural attraction is less than 1.2 miles\nfrom my house, but I've only been to it a few<\/span> times, most recently just to\nphotograph the front during one of Kyoto's evening light-up events<\/a>\n(with the first photo on that post being the entrance area of Kiyomizu\nTemple). I also<\/span> visited a\nyear<\/span> ago<\/a> with my Aunt Jeannette and Anthony.<\/p>\n\n

This time, since we were in hiking mode, we got to explore more of the\nrear regions of the temple complex than I'd ever explored before.<\/p>\n\n

The marquee visual feature is the main temple building, which hangs out\nover a hillside,<\/span> supported on a huge<\/span> lattice of wooden beams. Most people\nprobably won't find it very interesting from the rear (the photo above),\nbut I really<\/span> love the roof, which looks as if it's made of layer upon layer\nupon layer of thin wood strips.<\/p>\n\n

Next to the far end of the main building is a long<\/i> set of stairs\nheading down...<\/p>\n\n

These stairs featured a bit on this post<\/a> from last year,\nand the pagoda – visible in the far distance in the top-center of the\nphoto above – on a post<\/span> earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

We thought we'd hike over to the pagoda, and along the way got many nice\nviews of the main temple building...<\/p>\n\n

Anthony was a real trouper, so on the way back to the trailhead we\nstopped by for some refreshments....<\/p>\n\n

Next to the restaurant was some kind of water-spring thing, where you\nreach out with a long<\/span> scoop and to get some special water. The sign in<\/span>\nfront says “Otowa spring is the spring for wishes fulfillment, healthy\nlong-life<\/i>” in English, although the Japanese uses “waterfall” rather\nthan “spring”. It looked<\/span> fun to Anthony, so we gave it a try.<\/span> (It's\nfree.)<\/p>\n\n

Heading back up to Shogun-zuka was faster than the trip down. Walking\ndownhill really hurts my knees, but they're fine when I climb.<\/span> Also, in the\ndimming light of the approaching evening, I stopped<\/span> for photos much less.
