Well, I fall further<\/span> behind. I had been<\/span> planning to post the answer to\nthe What am I?<\/a> quiz\nfrom the other day (none of the guesses so far are even close), but Fumie\nhas been quite sick, so I wanted<\/span> to get Anthony out of the house so that\nshe could rest. I'd been wanting<\/span> to try some nearby hiking trails,\nand I ended<\/span> up with enough photos to fill at least five different blog\nposts.<\/p>\n\n

We started out after lunch with the grueling seven-minute<\/i> drive\nup to Shogunzuka. (We hit a few<\/span> red lights, so it took longer than\n\nusual :-))<\/p>\n\n\n

We had some excitement as we watched a helicopter<\/span> take off from the\nhelipad near the parking lot (posted about here<\/a>), and he\nheaded into the trails that lead down the mountain....<\/p>\n\n

I quickly learned that the mountain is covered in ferns of pretty much\nevery type imaginable. Ferns can be quite photogenic, but the lack of light\nunder the mountain treecover can make photography a challenge.<\/span> I got some<\/span>\nokay fern shots<\/a> during\na short hike<\/a> last\nsummer, but couldn't even replicate them this time.<\/p>\n\n

Anthony, of course, doesn't care; ferns, like anything in the path, is\nsubject to pokiture.<\/p>\n\n

It's difficult to make a photo that really shows the majesty of tall\ntrees. I've tried plenty of times; this tall bamboo desktop\nbackground<\/a> came out nicely, and so perhaps did one of the photos on\nthis fall-colors post<\/a>. The one at<\/span> the end of this\npost<\/a> less so. I'll keep plugging at it.<\/p>\n\n

I really shouldn't say “middle of nowhere” because as the crow flys,\nwe're just about exactly one mile from my place (with several major temples\nin between). That's the beauty of having mountains so close... you can “get\naway” with very little effort.<\/p>\n\n

It was all Anthony could do to not<\/i> poke him. I try to<\/span> let him be\nas free as possible, but harassing wildlife (like I did<\/span> when I was<\/span> a kid<\/span>)\nis over the line.<\/p>\n\n

The set of trails that we took wound down the mountain for half an hour\ntoward a back<\/span> entrance to a sorta<\/span>' famous spot. We come around<\/span> the corner\nand were greeted with...<\/p>\n\n

Our day continued, and in the end we hiked over 7km. My knees<\/span> have a\nhard<\/span> time of it when we go down (surprisingly, going up is no problem), but\nwe took it slow and it was fun. There are still plenty of trails yet to\ntry, all within a mile<\/span> or so of home.<\/p>\n\n

It often seems to be hazy when I come<\/span> up here, although it's on my list\nto try to come up after a typhoon<\/span> passes through, because the air is quite\nclear after that as it was\nonce<\/a> when I came<\/span> up here last year.<\/p>\n\n
