Kevin is the youngest of 10 kids, and – according to the “life\nhistory” that he wrote about himself for the reception guests – the\ncutest of them all. Not all his<\/span> family could make it to Japan for the\nwedding, so I thought<\/span> I'd publish a few<\/span> more pics right away, for their\nbenefit...<\/p>\n\n\n

Their time was divided pretty evenly between posing for photos and other\nstuff (where “other stuff” encompasses random little things like actually\ngetting married, visiting with guests, cutting the cake, etc.). There was a\nlot<\/span> of posing.<\/p>\n\n

I suppose that If I looked that good, I'd spend<\/span> my time posing as well, but that's left to speculation.<\/p>\n\n

The two photos above were taken 10 minutes apart (from different\nlocations, with different lenses), but they happen to fit together so\nnicely that I thought<\/span> I'd place them as I did.<\/span> I don't<\/span> know whether it\nreally “works”, but it's worth a try.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

After a long photo-op in the lobby, we moved up to the 68th floor for\nthe reception. There were two “welcome” signs that I'm sure where hand\npainted by the kids, although I got<\/span> only one good photo...<\/p>\n\n

Well, okay, the lighting changed as well.... dramatically<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n

(My own boy Anthony has been a ring bearer twice, once for my brother and his\nfiancee<\/a>, and another time for a friend of Fumie<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n

The event was held on the 68th floor of the Yokohama\nLandmark Tower<\/a>, the tallest building in Japan, in a room<\/span> with an entire\nwall of windows, offering an amazing view. Unfortunately, that made it seem\nto the camera as if the sun was brought down to earth and placed directly\nbehind whatever you were trying to photograph, so it was really challenging\nto get an exposure appropriate for the dark foreground — people,\ncakes, etc. — instead of the bright outside. Spot metering is your\nfriend.<\/p>\n\n

The pro photographer used a fill flash, of course, but I didn't<\/span> have a\nflash<\/span> with me (well, except the on-camera flash that I wouldn't<\/span> want to use\nin this case). And to be<\/span> frank, even if I did<\/span> bring one of my off-camera\nflashes, I simply<\/span> don't have the skill to use it with confidence, despite\nhaving read Strobist<\/a> for a long<\/span> time. I must actually<\/span> practice, rather than just read.<\/p>\n\n

Sometimes it all came together for a nice<\/span> shot, like the one above. It looks<\/span> almost as if Yoko is an angel that the light is reluctant to give up.<\/p>\n\n

I took that photo from my seat at the reception (luckily, there was no\none behind me, so I could<\/span> stand and wield my big lenses freely), but I had<\/span>\nto move toward the windows if I wanted<\/span> to get a shot<\/span> without the windows\nblinding from behind. I did that<\/span> for this shot of Kevin's brother...<\/p>\n\n

The photo above originally came out very dark, because I goofed<\/span> up and\nexposed for the bright windows, but because I shoot in raw<\/a>, I was able<\/span>\nto recover something and ended up with a gritty<\/span> image that I sort<\/span> of like.<\/p>\n\n

Mostly, though, you probably don't want “gritty” at a wedding.<\/span> I seemed<\/span> to have neglected to get a shot<\/span> of the entire cake – all three or\nfour tiers – which further shows my wedding-photographer\nshortcomings. Unlike a true<\/span> pro, though, I actually<\/span> got a piece<\/span> (it was\nlarge enough for everyone to have a slice<\/span>), so I can<\/i> report that it\nwas delicious.<\/p>\n\n

Also along the “not gritty” lines, Yoko's mother was the epitome of\nunderstated class and style...<\/p>\n\n

Kevin's lived in Japan for 20+ years, so it's been a long<\/span> time since\nhe's celebrated a birthday<\/span> with his Stateside family. His birthday<\/span> was two\ndays before the wedding, so with a lot<\/span> of family in town today, Yoko\nsurprised him with a birthday<\/span> party during the reception.<\/p>\n\n

This was one of the few cases that I really<\/span> nailed the difficult exposure, I think.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

At the end, they bade farewell in the foyer, basking in the warm glow of\nboth the incandescent lights and the happy day. Nao did a<\/span> jig.<\/p>\n\n
