I attended the wedding of an old friend yesterday; Kevin and Yoko tied\nthe knot on the 68th floor of Yokohama's Landmark Tower<\/a>, the tallest building in Japan. They appeared on\nmy Impromptu Portraits in\nthe Park<\/a> post last year not long after they got engaged, as well as in\nfollowups here<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Kevin is one of those guys who looks better and better with age, but\nreally, you almost didn't notice him or anything else when Yoko was\npresent. “Spectacular” just doesn't do her or that dress justice.<\/p>\n\n

Kevin's selection for the engagement ring – seen out of focus in\nthe photo above – has a wonderful<\/span> little story. It's a diamond<\/span>,\nflanked on either side by sapphires: to Kevin, the diamond represents Yoko,\nand the two jewels represent Kana and Nao, Yoko's remarkably photogenic\nchildren (seen in the posts linked above). And supporting<\/span> and protecting\nthem all is the band, which represents Kevin.<\/p>\n\n\n

I have immense respect for a good wedding photographer, because the\nphotographic challenges of a wedding<\/span> are usually formidable. Wedding\nvenues seem to always have horrible lighting: way too little light, with\nwhat is<\/i> there usually being of mixed colors (e.g. fluorescent mixed\nwith incandescent, which makes for a color balance<\/a>\nnightmare).<\/p>\n\n

This time was no exception, especially the lack of light during the\nphoto op in the lobby. I had the<\/span> ISO cranked up, and was usually shooting\nwide open or close. The results<\/span> were better than the last time I was<\/span> at a\nwedding<\/span><\/a>, but I only<\/span> had a point<\/span>-n-shoot then. I did do<\/span> better than the\nlast time I had<\/span> a real<\/span> camera at a wedding<\/span> (my brother Alan's marriage to Natalie<\/a>\ntwo years ago), due to having a little<\/span> more skill now, and a much<\/span> faster\nlens.<\/p>\n\n

Still, even with the faster lenses, many of my shots were blurry. Here's\none where I think<\/span> the blur really helps to capture the moment, as the young\nrelatives gathered for a photo.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

One of Yoko's friends did the bouquet, boutonnière, and all the\nflowers, so I figured<\/span> that she'd be able to handle my big camera<\/a>\nand heavy\nlens<\/a>, so I imposed<\/span> on her to take a shot<\/span> with me in it. She was hesitant<\/span> at first, but the weight and the solid sound of a real<\/span> shutter\nfelt satisfying<\/i>, so she enjoyed it (and did a great<\/span> job)...<\/p>\n\n

I met Tim, Kevin, and Mike via a “Life in Japan” mailing list 18 or so\nyears ago (long prior to the world wide web). All three<\/span> attended my wedding<\/a> 10 years\nago, and now that I think<\/span> about it, I don't<\/span> think I'd actually met Tim or\nMike since. It was wonderful<\/span> to catch up.<\/p>\n\n

Two things I must<\/span> make clear, though, about that picture:<\/p>\n

  1. No, I'm not really<\/span> that tall. I had to<\/span> stand one step higher than the rest, to avoid standing on Yoko's dress.<\/li>\n
  2. No, I'm not really<\/span> that fat. Seriously, next to Yoko and that amazing dress, how can anyone else look good?\n (Well, okay, anyone else except for Kevin, Tim, and Mike?)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

    At least I'm not totally ruining the shot with my horrible “smile for\nthe camera” fake smile. I just can<\/span>'t smile on demand in a way<\/span> that doesn't\nlook anything but hugely dorky, so this time I was<\/span> trying to not smile.\nThis was the only shot of the several that Ami-chan took that came out with\nme not looking sour, so I've still got work to do. (Or better yet, I'll\nstay on the other side of the camera.)<\/p>\n\n

    I've heard that Japanese weddings can be excruciatingly long and drawn\nout productions, but the one's I've been to have all been really nice.\n(Counting my own, this was the fourth wedding I've been to in Japan.) Kevin\nand Yoko had a combined<\/span> wedding\/reception 68 floors up that was just\nexcellent, at least from the perspectives of the couple and guests. The photographer<\/span> they hired, however, may have a different<\/span> opinion due to the\n– you guessed it – challenging lighting, but I'll leave that\nfor another post.<\/p>\n\n
